The Greatest American Hero set for a Movie Remake; Lord and Miller set to helm project

It's story centers on  schoolteacher named Isaac who discovers a suit that gives him superpowers. While this should be good news for him, the problem is that Isaac is usually stuck trying to figure out how to use the thing through trial and error because he can’t find the instructions. New Movies Syowing this Week [August 27 to September 2, 2014]

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
This is an adaptation of Frank Miller's noir graphic novels, directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller himself. Just like the first adaptation, which was way back in 2005, this movie takes the monochromatic visual style of the graphic novel and literally translates into movie format, with a highly stylized approach that is surreal and reminiscent of classic films as well. As it is heavily influenced by 1930's crime noir, Sin City centers its stories on various characters involved in the criminal underworld.
Snap Impression: Although there is quite a number of naysaying critics who gave this movie a low rating, and although it was a flop at the US box office, there are a few critics who praised this movie for what its worth; a stylized neo-noir that should be taken for its adult pulp context. Yes, I have faith in this movie, even when all the factors alert me to do otherwise.

The Purge: Anarchy
In the suspense thriller The Purge, the government has sanctioned that once every year, within the limited time of 7:00 in the evening till 7:00 AM the morning after, any known crime is legal, and all services (police, fire department, hospitals and emergency rooms) are closed. It is said to act as a catharsis for the citizens, but in reality, it is used as a method of artificial population control, in which the poorer and homeless people are the main targets. The first movie centered from the point of view of a family, and within the confines of their home. This sequel takes us to the streets where the real horror happens.
Snap Impression: The core concept of The Purge is quite unique and refreshing. While I was not quite satisfied with how the first movie turned out, I have my full trust in this sequel. Plus, I should also point out that that this movie was praised by numerous critics.
SCREENING SKEDS: Robinson's Movieworld Cinema 3 = 12:00 PM | 2:05 PM | 4:10 PM | 6:15 PM | 8:20 PM

The Giver
Based on Lois Lowry's beloved young adult science fiction novel of the same name, the story of The Giver centers on Jonas (Brenton Thwaites), a young man who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Yet as he begins to spend time with The Giver (Jeff Bridges), who is the sole keeper of all the community's memories, Jonas quickly begins to discover the dark and deadly truths of his community's secret past, and realizes true pain and pleasure of the "real" world.
Snap Impression: If I was probably in the mood for a good science fiction movie that has undertones of social equality, starring teen stars, meant to lure a teenage demographic, then you're probably going to be okay with this movie.

Pudsey: The Movie
This is about 2012 Britain's Got Talent winner Pudsey the dog on an adventure. Pudsey uses his ability to walk on his hind legs and knock people over to save the day.
Snap Impression: No, thank you. While I honestly have nothing against family movies about cute dogs, this movie however, was mercilessly panned by numerous critics, with one writer calling it "so depressingly bad"

Provoked
This supernatural horror follows a group of amateur investigators who had become desperate in trying to prove the existence of the paranormal. Their team member, Matt performs risky attempts to provoke the spirits, which had answered Matt's taunts and followed him home. Terror quickly escalates for Matt, and his girlfriend, who attempts to defend his house from the ghostly intruder.
Snap Impression: No, thanks. It simply looks cheap and formulaic.

New Movies Syowing this Week [August 20 to 26, 2014]

Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno
A former assassin is drawn back into his life as the government asks him to help take down the dangerous leader of a terrorist army threatening to destroy the nation's fragile peace. This is the second installment of what is set up to be a Rurouni Kenshin trilogy, the third movie scheduled for September this year.
Snap Impression: The first movie was satisfactorily good, if you already love the anime and/or the manga of Rurouni Kenshin: Sure, why not check this movie? But expect that, just like the first movie, it has some degree of appropriate campy factor

The Angriest Man In Brooklyn
A man is mistakenly told that he has just ninety minutes to live, and he uses that remaining time to try and quickly reconcile with all the people he's done wrong. This is Robin Williams' last movie released while he was still alive (He has three more movies which are yet to be released).
Snap Impression: Setting all the negative reviews aside, this movie would be worth watching for those who still want to see one of Williams' last acting gigs, if not for the haunting "death-causing-farewells theme"
SCREENING SKEDS: SM Iloilo Cinema 1 = 6:30 PM | 9:00 PM

Somebody To Love (2014)
Twelve people over the course of a week go through a wide range of experiences relating to love and heartbreak. This is a Tagalog romantic-comedy that is directed by Jose Javier Reyes.
Snap Impression: Although Jose Javier Reyes is hit-or-miss, I seriously have low expectations. But giving him the benefit of the doubt, at least he endeavors to make something that seems more character-based. You have to admit, though, that the trailer makes it look vomit-inducing.

Planes: Fire And Rescue
This Pixar animated movie is about a champion racing plane who gets his engine damage and is forced to retire. He finds new purpose by joining a firefighting crew and helping extinguish forest fires.

Talk Back And You're Dead
A model student finds herself in a relationship with a delinquent gang leader. Her perfect life is soon thrown into chaos, even as she finds a measure of happiness in the romance. This Pinoy teen flick is directed by Andoy Ranay and stars some young cast.
Snap Impression: This is obviously the kind of garbage that will expire quickly. Trust me; nobody will remember this movie six months from now.

A Good Man
An elite military operative lies low in Romania, quietly hunting an arms dealer that got away in an operation that ended in tragedy. This action flick that stars Steven Seagal was released straight-to-DVD in the US.
Snap Impression: If this was direct-to-DVD in the US, I'm sure I can watch this movie off a cheaper source. It looks like your run-of-the-mill typical bland action flick anyway.

The Possession Of Michael King
A man makes a film intending to debunk the power of the occult, but ends up harboring a dark spirit in his body instead.

Shazam is DC's Next Movie in line; Dwayne Johnson to Star

Dwayne Johnson has confirmed that he will be part of DC's next superhero movie which is going to be Shazam. In the comics, Shazam is originally known as Captain Marvel, but the movie is said to use the name Shazam instead for the character. Shazam is the big hunky superhero whose alter-ego is actually just a kid named Billy Batson. Several reports indicate that Johnson might be playing either the title character Shazam or the villain Black Adam. Syowing this Week [August 13 to 19, 2014]

Kamera Obskura
The title “Kamera Obskura” is a Filipino spelling of the latin “Camera Obscura” which simply means “dark room”. The film’s concept adheres to formalist cinema, where the filmmaker’s thesis is to make a semblance of a vintage film seemingly produced sometime in the late 1920s to early 1930s in the Philippines. The thesis is to conjure up a film from a period that did not really exist in Philippine cinema’s historical cultural heritage as we know it, such as a pseudo-expressionist / experimental Filipino cinema of the silent film era. It is a film within a film. The narrative plays with the idea of a retro-futurist world where a prisoner locked away in a dark chamber for over two decades only sees the reality of the world outside through the small hole in his cell, which projects an image of the city on his wall, the phenomenon of the “camera obscura”. He later immerses back into society by slowly climbing up the different social classes represented by the levels of different floors in a mysterious building, were corruption, deceit, and betrayal seem to be at work at every level. The film KAMERA OBSKURA is a tribute to Filipino cinema heritage. Through the re-imagining of an era of cinema in the transition from the lost silent era, the filmmaker hopes to instill in the next generation the recognition of the value of passing on that heritage before it is totally lost.
Snap Impression: This movie definitely has a must-see stamp all over it; we have one of the best filmmakers in the Philippines coupled with such a unique concept. I will be watching this movie this week, and will be urging people to watch it as well.

Expendables 3
Barney Ross and his team, the Expendables, have an encounter with the ruthless arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks, who Ross thought was dead, and was actually a co-founding memeber of the Expendables. In the past, Ross was forced to kill Stonebanks after he became a ruthless arms trader, but Stonebanks survived and has now made it his mission to destroy the Expendables. Ross is going to great lengths to stop Stonebanks, and even employs a new Expendables team, only to realize that he will need the help of his own original Expendables team as well. This third installment of Stallone's action icons ensemble series is the subject of much controversy because copies of it had leaked over the internet and into pirate markets for almost a month now.
Snap Impression: Nevertheless, the Expendables concept is pure fun and simply a visual popcorn spectacle that is best appreciated in the big screen; so yes, for action lovers, this one is worth the peso.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
This reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film series is based on the comics and animation series of the same title. It is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett, and William Fichtner. The basic premise focuses on four mutant turtles who were trained to be ninja warriors by their master who is also a mutated rat, as they battle crime, evil, and a ruthless evil ninja organization known as the Foot Clan.
Snap Impression: At least Michael Bay is only acting as producer, this movie could possibly be nothing but merely just a mindless fun movie to watch. I have no problem spending for this; but if you have not watched Guardians of the Galaxy, go check that out instead.

What If (2013)
Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) who is scarred by his previous relationships meets Chantry (Zoe Kazan) who quickly becomes his best friend. As the two get closer, they begin to wonder if the potential love is worth risking their friendship. This movie is originally titled "The F Word" which actually refers to "Friend Zone"
Snap Impression: It's an old love story formula but the movie seems to have a refreshingly smart and charming approach which does not seem too corny or needlesly flashy. If you're the kind who loves romantic films, this one seems like it's pretty much worth the peso.

After Annie asks Jay to delete the tape, he ends up inadvertently synching the video to several iPads the couple had given away over time. After struggling to get it out of the cloud, they set out to get back all of the gifted iPads, leading to a series of awkward encounters and close calls.
Snap Impression: Although it may be an interesting and funny premise, the movie's is torn apart by the generally negative reviews it got when it was released in the US a month ago. I think this film's gonna be a waste of time.

Andrew Leavold’s documentary “The Search for Weng Weng” is not only this fascinating documentary about the onscreen exploits and off-screen exploitation of the legendary two-foot-nine-inch Filipino action star, but at the undertone of documentary, is an eye-opener that tells us a lot about Philippine cinema. At the surface of it is this fascinating story of an unusual human being named Ernesto De la Cruz who was born with some sort of size abnormality, his existence coated with influences of superstition and religion, and linking him to the likeness of the Santo Niño. And how his family’s poverty led him to be “adopted” and used by a wealthy couple who were film producers. [hit the jump to continue]

This 2013 horror movie is quite underrated and was highly praised among horror critics. Since it's an old film, you can probably find a copy of it online.

Sony planning a Female-Led Spider-man Spin-Off Movie
