Sony Pictures has confirmed that it has indeed been developing a live-action Masters of the Universe movie based on the popular 80's cartoon "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" The Studio has been developing it with filmmaker McG, but to those who do not like McG's style (including myself), we've got good news; it looks like he's not involved with the project anymore.

This live-action adaptation on the popular He-Man cartoon has actually been in development for years now, but has been somewhat cursed. Warner Bros. dropped the property in 2009, but then Sony picked it up and set G.I. Joe: Retaliation filmmaker Jon M. Chu to direct. That obviously didn’t pan out, and in the meantime Sony has had an army of writers trying to tackle the screenplay. The fragile reliability of whether this film is gonna get made is probably the primary reason why any news about it has been widely ignored.

But according to some reliable sources, Man of Steel and Batman Begins screenwriter David S. Goyer is now on the job while Sony is meeting with potential directors. In 2014 the studio considered filmmakers like Harald Zwart (The Karate Kid remake), Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie), and Mike Cahill (Another Earth). There was a "Masters of the Universe" way back in 1987 with Dolph Lundgren as He-Man. But despite its cult status, it was considered as a lame and disappointing adaptation.

If you ask me, "Masters of the Universe" is indeed a complex piece to adapt. If you just think of the Frank Frazetta mini-comics that came with the toys in the 80's, the world of He-Man looks like it deserves a serious adaptation ala Lord of the Rings. But if you think about it as the toy it was originally concieved to be, along with the popular 80's cartoon, you could even think that it deserves a wild, goofy adaptation ala 21 Jumpstreet. The warlocks, knights, and dragons concept is not an easy subject to adapt. Just look at how the "Warcraft" movie turned out. If it was up to me, I'd probably go with taking influences such as The Lord of the Rings movies, the Schwarzenegger-starred Conan the Barbarian, and the Chronicles of Riddick as references. If only somebody slammed me a multi-million-dollar project like that.

Meanwhile, check the trailer of the 1987 movie and how promising it was... Oh if only they did not travel to then present Earth...

The Cinema Exmundo UPV Cinematheque presents a screening of the French film noir masterpiece "Du Rififi Chez Les Hommes" (also known as simply just "Rififi") directed by Jules Dassin, on Sunday May 7, 2017 2:00 PM at the UPV Cinematheque, U.P Visayas, Iloilo City Campus, Infante Ave., Iloilo City.

This 1955 French crime film adaptation of Auguste Le Breton's novel of the same name, is directed by American blacklisted filmmaker Jules Dassin, the film stars Jean Servais as the aging gangster Tony "le Stéphanois", Carl Möhner as Jo "le Suédois", Robert Manuel as Mario Farrati, and Jules Dassin as César "le Milanais". The foursome band together to commit an almost impossible theft, the burglary of an exclusive jewelry shop on the Rue de Rivoli. The centerpiece of the film is an intricate half-hour heist scene depicting the crime in detail, shot in near silence, without dialogue or music. The fictional burglary has been mimicked by criminals in actual crimes around the world. After he was blacklisted from Hollywood, Dassin found work in France where he was asked to direct Rififi. Despite his distaste for parts of the original novel, Dassin agreed to direct the film. He shot Rififi while working with a low budget, without a star cast, and with the production staff working for low wages. Upon the initial release of the film, it received positive reactions from audiences and critics in France, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The film earned Dassin the award for Best Director at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival. Rififi was nominated by the National Board of Review for Best Foreign Film. Rififi was re-released theatrically in both 2000 and 2015 and is still highly acclaimed by modern film critics as one of the greatest works in French film noir.
Dwayne Johnson has confirmed that Rampage will indeed by his next project, a plot bit, and the role he's playing.

There's no denying that Dwayne Johnson is one of Hollywood's most hardworking actors. And now, he is slated to jump into what appears to be another gigantic spectacle of a movie; the film adaptation of "Rampage" the beloved tower arcade game in which monsters destroy cities. Johnson took to Instagram to give some plot details and a sense of how the game has been constructed as a story, which will center on an anti-poaching unit led by Johnson and his albino-gorilla friend, George, who becomes one of the famous monsters from the game thanks to a groundbreakings serum. I can’t say that this sounds particularly original but the storylines in movies like this almost never matter – it’s the performers, the direction, the CGI, and the overall look of the film that will decide whether this is a success.

Here’s Johnson’s text from the Instagram post:
"Goin' primal. Good to finally have boots on the ground here in Georgia for production of RAMPAGE. I head up an anti poaching unit out of Rwanda. My best friend is a rare albino gorilla named, George. Very bad people infect George, an alligator and a wolf with a serum. All three animals grow at an unprecedented rate. Their size, speed, agility and violent aggression is off the charts. They go on a deadly rampage and want to destroy the world. George not happy. Me not happy. When animals like you, they lick you. When they don’t like you, they kill you. I will hunt down the bad people who did this to my best friend. And when I find them, I will not lick them.

We have the best VFX monster making team (WETA) on the planet. Our actors and crew have been working very hard to raise the monster genre bar. As always, let’s have some fun. Let’s shoot."

The FDCP Cinematheque has just announced the extension of screening for the film "2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten" by Petersen Vargas, on May 3 and 4, 2017 at 6PM. Admission fee is PHP 150. The film opened in Cinematheque Iloilo last April 26, 2017 and has received a warm, packed reception. So much so that an extension is well deserved.
This Pinoy coming-of-age drama film directed by Petersen Vargas in his feature-length directorial debut and written by Jason Paul Laxamana, stars Khalil Ramos, Ethan Salvador and Jameson Blake. It depicts the mysterious coming-of-age tale of Felix after he met half-American Snyder brothers, Magnus and Maxim.

The film premiered on November 17, 2016 at the 2016 Cinema One Originals Film Festival, where it won three awards, including Best Picture.
Last Tuesday, FDCP Cinematheque held the program "SiPat: Sine at Panitikan". This is part of the Buwan ng Panitikan ng Filipinas 2017. The event began with a screening of the newly restored film classic "Noli Me Tangere" by legendary Filipino filmmaker Gerry De Leon. Then the screening was followed by a lecture and Q & A with Film Archivist and National Commission for Culture and the Arts Commissioner Teddy Co, and G. RR Cagalingan of the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino.
The event was followed by snacks and ended with a Poetika that highlighted Fiction Reading. The Fiction Reading opened with the works of Palanca Hall of Famer Leoncio P. Deriada, and the zines of writers in the region.

This is actually the first time I watched Gerry De Leon's "Noli Me Tangere" and it was a very lovely piece of art, with groundbreaking film techniques and remarkable acting that could match with today's thespians. The lecture that followed was eye-opening as well. Mr. Cagalingan was able to talk about Philippine literature and how it may relate to such adaptive forms of art such as in film. Mr. Co on the other hand was able to talk about similar topics from more of the film art point of view, and he was able to elaborate on the restoration of films as well.

The Poetika which featured Fiction Reading capped the evening in a lovely and vibrant manner, as it attracted readers, writers, and lovers of literary art. For an art event that was held on a Tuesday, it was such a success. We could hope to see more of events like this, and see you by then as well.

Legendary filmmaker Jonathan Demme has died at the age of 73. Per IndieWire, the Oscar-winning director passed away from esophageal cancer and complications from heart disease, for which he was originally treated in 2010 and suffered a recurrence in 2015. He is survived by his wife, the artist Joanne Howard, and their three children.

Demme was one of the most versatile filmmakers who ever lived. He first broke into the business in the early 70s working with producer Roger Corman and directing films like "Caged Heat" and "Citizens Band". In the 80s, Demme delved into action romcom territory with "Something Wild" as well as the comedy "Married to the Mob", while also helming one of the greatest music documentaries of all time: the Talking Heads concert film "Stop Making Sense".

In the 90s, of course, Demme really soared. He won the Best Director Oscar for 1991’s masterful "Silence of the Lambs", which is one of only three films to win Director, Picture, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay, not to mention the only horror film to ever win Best Picture. Demme then followed that up with 1993’s tremendous "Philadelphia", which at the time was something of a controversial decision. The drama tackled the AIDS epidemic at a time when there was still great stigma surrounding the disease, and it’s a testament to Demme, Tom Hanks, and an admittedly reluctant Denzel Washington that they made a push to make this film and bring AIDS and the LGBT community to the forefront of the conversation. The movie won Tom Hanks a Best Actor Oscar.

In the subsequent years, Demme stretched his talents on a variety of films to varying degrees of success, such as the Charade remake "The Truth About Charlie" and the thriller "The Manchurian Candidate". Demme returned to form in 2008 with "Rachel Getting Married", and his most recent narrative feature was the lighthearted 2015 film "Ricki and the Flash".

It is perhaps fitting that Demme’s final work was the tremendous and joyful concert documentary Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids, released last year on Netflix. The film is a perfect example of Demme’s unique eye for character and finding the humanity in every shot—you can feel the energy of Timberlake and his band onstage, and that’s all Demme. The film is on Netflix right now and I highly recommend checking it out.

Demme leaves behind a legacy most directors would dream of having, but he is gone too soon. Our thoughts are with his family and friends in this difficult time.

Once upon a time, many film fans have been bullied by a system wherein they cannot get to enjoy and appreciate the quality award-winning Pinoy indie films that are being released nationwide because mall screenings have been so cruelly oppressive on these films. Let's say "ABC" is an award-winning Pinoy indie film; it is set for nationwide release, and opens on the usual "first-day-wednesday" screening sked. Do not ever make the mistake of personally scheduling to watch it on Saturday, because the malls may prematurely pull out the said film off their cinemas by Thursday if they're not happy with the ticket sales of said film. If you ask me, it's a cruel rule, considering that you could not seriously judge the marketability of a film just on the first two midweek screening days; Wednesday and Thursday. Because most of us, schedule our screenings on the most convenient days such as Fridays or the weekends. Many of us fans have been just at the mercy of this very discriminating rule. Well, now the FDCP has taken steps, and signed contracts to ensure the security of these indie film screenings.

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) recently partnered with SM Cinema in its efforts to strengthen its commitment to support Philippine cinema as well as champion independent films. Cine Lokal is a new cinema line which aims to house award-winning, independent films and FDCP programs to selected SM Cinema branches across the country. Last April 21, 2017, the Cine Lokal was launched in SM City Iloilo.

"Cine Lokal's goal is two-fold: to provide independent filmmakers with a commercial venue for their films, thereby strengthening their experience and training on film marketing and distribution, and to create a culture of support and viewership among Filipinos nationwide. Independent films mirror our society’s milieu in the most meaningful and affective of ways and we are grateful to SM Cinema for this great opportunity for us to bring more choices of these films closer to our people,” said FDCP Chairperson Liza Diño.

Movie lovers and independent film enthusiasts alike can expect an exciting roster of award-winning, independent films at Cine Lokal. Among the films scheduled to be shown as part of the launching are the digitally remastered and restored version of "Himala" (Ishmael Bernal), "Iadya Mo Kami" (Mel Chionglo), "Of Sinners and Saints" (Ruben Soriquez) and Academy Awards 2015 Best Picture winner "Spotlight".

Aside from the FDCP Cinematheque, in Solis Street, we now have Cine Lokal at SM Cinema 7 to be a venue for us to screen these wonderful indie films.

Guimbal was recently under the spotlight with the 13th Bantayan Film Festival happening last week, April 6, 2017.

The festival was graced by prestigious guests that included FDCP Chair Liza Dino-Seguerra and Executive Director Wilfredo Manalang, QCFDC Executive Director Ed Lejano Jr., Writer and Producer Moira Lang, and CineKasimanwa founder and NCCA National Executive Committee on Cinema member Elvert Bañares. Filmmakers from around Western Visayas were present to grace the festival as well.

FDCP Chair Liza Dino-Seguerra had high praises for the festival, and in her facebook post, she expressed her strong, inspiring positive emotions toward the festival:

"Overwhelmed. Humbled. Inspired.

Who would've thought that in a small town in Iloilo, there exists a film loving community which gathers together every year to watch films made by homegrown filmmakers?

This is Guimbal, Iloilo, celebrating their 13th edition of Bantayan Film Fest. Launched in 2005, this is the longest running film festival in Western Visayas region. Kasabay Lang ng Cinemalaya.

It was truly a humbling experience watching the featured films last night with the townspeople of Guimbal.

They laughed, cried, and screamed together as they saw their peers onscreen playing roles to different stories that speak about their culture, tradition, and everyday life.

There were so many poignant moments from the films I watched. There was a sense of innocence in the way they tell their stories----simple yet powerful.

Being there last night reinforced why I am here, and why FDCP is here for the film communities in the regions.

FDCP's support comes from the strong focus of our agency to empower our regions to create and nurture a film culture unique to each individual locality. We believe that each region has a great potential to take their cultures, identities, and beliefs, and translate it into powerful films that are meaningful and will have an impact on not just the local audience, but audiences nationwide.

Guimbal proved that with consistency, we can develop our audiences.

I am very proud of what the Guimbal filmmakers have achieved through the years and rest assured that FDCP will be behind you in all your film efforts in whatever support we can give. We look forward to showcasing your films not only in the country but hopefully soon, to the whole world.

Congratulations Guimbal! Until next year!"
Filming is underway on the Tomb Raider reboot, and the first images have popped up online. Alicia Vikander stars in the upcoming film directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave). This new film will break away from the Angelina Jolie pictures by being more in line with the 2013 reboot of the video game, also titled “Tomb Raider” and its 2015 sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider. Rather than a clean tank top and perfectly styled hair, this new movie is meant to evoke the gritty, life-or-death stakes evoked by the recent video games.

The new film also has a different plot. Per Vanity Fair, “seven years after the disappearance of her father, 21-year-old Lara has refused to take the reins of his global business empire, instead working as a bike courier in London while taking college classes. Eventually she becomes inspired to investigate her father’s disappearance and travels to his last-known location: a tomb on an island somewhere off the coast of Japan.”

Vikander talks to Vanity Fair with more stuff about this upcoming project...
“I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits—tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass! She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously. It’s a lot of fun trying to get into Lara’s head and the challenge of getting to grips with such a physical role is an element of this project that I find an absolute thrill.”

Meanwhile, this is what director Roar Uthaug has said in an interview with GQ...
“We drew a lot of inspiration and reference from the game and the entire Tomb Raider canon to develop our world, and I believe fans will recognize that. At the same time, this is a completely different theatrical approach to Lara Croft that will offer something new in the origin and development of the character. It’s a story that not only highlights her incredible physical accomplishments but delves deeper into her humanity.”

Tomb Raider also stars Dominic West, Walton Goggins, and Daniel Wu, and is set for a summer 2018 Philippine release date.
"Bliss" a psychological thriller which is the new film from Heneral Luna director Jerrold Tarog has been causing much controversy lately. Not only because its main actress Iza Calzado won Best Actress at the Osaka Film Festival 2017 for this movie. The other controversy is that the MTRCB attempted to axe it with an “X” rating. But now thankfully, it was given an R-18 Rating.

Initially, an "X" rating was was given by the Movie and Television Review Board to "Bliss", which means that film is not allowed to be shown in public; meaning: the film will not be allowed to screen in cinemas.

Inside sources reveal that the film contains "explicit nudity scenes." If there is one thing I personally learned from some insiders, it's that oftentimes, judgment of classifying these films can get quite opinionated. Some people may see an artwork like "Schindler's List" as pornography, while others may think it's okay for underaged teenagers to watch something that is truly lewd as the "Fifty Shades of Grey" movies. One person's porn may actually be another person's piece of art.

The Studio was said to have submitted an appeal for a second review of the movie. The statement read: “We understand and respect the decision of the MTRCB reviewing committee regarding the film Bliss. We are currently going through the process of submitting an appeal for a second review and hope for a more favorable result.”

It was probably that appeal that bore fruit for Bliss, because now, the film finally got an R-18 rating upon its second review with the Movie Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). "Bliss" can now be shown in Philippine cinemas, and will go forward with their planned May 10, 2017 release date.

The new MTRCB panel composed of Direk Joey Romero, Bibeth Orteza, Gladys Reyes, Consoliza Laguardia and Atty. Ogie Jaro reversed the earlier classification and gave the film "Bliss" a unanimous R-18 WITHOUT CUTS.

In the film, Actress Jane Ciego (Iza Calzado) entered showbiz at a young age. Though equally popular and successful, Jane, now in her 30’s, has become tired of the usual projects she’s been getting. She decides to produce her own film to win some respect in the industry. But things do not go as planned. A terrible accident on the set of her dream project leaves her temporarily crippled, trapped in a house filled with bizarre phenomena and under the care of her unfeeling husband Carlo and a strange nurse named Lilibeth. With the horrors and madness escalating each day, Jane’s simple dream turns into an endless nightmare.

See you May 10 in theaters.
Some of you may be excited for the upcoming remake/adaptation of Stephen King's "It". The upcoming horror film from director Andrés Muschietti (Mama) follows a group of teenagers in Derry, Maine who are attacked by the malevolent forced, Pennywise. Although Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard) is frequently depicted as a clown, he actually takes the form of your worst fear. “He doesn’t have a steady behavior, he doesn’t expose how he thinks, and that’s what makes him really unpredictable,”

Ever since around 15 years now, studios have begun acknowledging the potential of sequels and/or turning films into franchises. It's no different with "It" as it is now up for advance-planning the possibility if the film becomes a hit success and he gets to follow through on a second, and/or concluding chapter. The upcoming film focuses on the group of teenagers named “The Losers Club”. There’s young Bill Denbrough (Jaeden Lieberher), overweight Ben Hanscom (Jeremy Ray Taylor), loudmouth Richie Tozier (Finn Wolfhard), clean freak Stan Uris (Wyatt Oleff), history lover Mike Hanlon (Chosen Jacobs), hypochondriac Eddie Kaspbrak (Jack Dylan Grazer) and tomboy Beverly Marsh (Sophia Lillis).

But for Muschietti, it’s all about how the two halves of Stephen King’s novel come together. “It happens in the book, this coming of age and kids facing their own mortality, which is something that in real life happens in a more progressive way and slowed down,” Muschietti says. “There’s a passage (in It) that reads, ‘Being a kid is learning how to live and being an adult is learning how to die.’ There’s a bit of a metaphor of that and it just happens in a very brutal way, of course.”

If It is a success, there will be a follow-up that takes place 30 years later and has the group as adults once again confronting Pennywise. “It’s about remembering things that they have forgot. Getting back in touch with those memories is such an important part of the plot,” says Muschietti, adding that there are a few hints in this fall’s It “that make you think about what will happen 30 years later when Pennywise comes again.”

"It" is slated for a September 7, 2017 Philippine release date.
Nothing much on what is new on Iloilo's silver screens this week. We can only highlight the Ilonggo Films that will be screened at the FDCP Cinematheque this weekend; the CineKasimanwa: Western Visayas Film Festival in partnership with the Film Development Council of the Philippines' Cinematheque Iloilo presents "Pag+uo" a screening of Ilonggo Films that are appropriate for this solemn season. We will be talking more about that on tomorrow's edition of my column. So far, there are only two new on the mainstream theaters.
Five year old Saroo gets lost on a train which takes him thousands of miles across India, away from home and family. Saroo must learn to survive alone in Kolkata, before ultimately being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination, and a revolutionary technology known as Google Earth, he sets out to find his lost family and finally return to his first home. This highly acclaimed biographical film directed by Garth Davis (in his feature debut) and written by Luke Davies, is based on the non-fiction book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley with Larry Buttrose. The film stars Dev Patel, Rooney Mara, David Wenham and Nicole Kidman. It received six Oscar nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Patel), Best Supporting Actress (Kidman) and Best Adapted Screenplay. It also received five nominations at the 70th British Academy Film Awards, winning two for Best Supporting Actor (Patel) and Best Adapted Screenplay. Snap Impression: All its awards speak for itself. This is definitely worth checking out.
Going in Style
When the company they worked for is bought out, their pensions become a casualty of the restructuring. Inspired by a bank robbery one of them witnesses, three seniors decide to take back what is rightfully owed them from the bank holding the company's pension funds. This remake of the 1979 film of the same name is directed by Zach Braff and written by Theodore Melfi, the film stars Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Alan Arkin, Joey King, Matt Dillon and Ann-Margret. Snap Impression: This looks like fun; Caine, Freeman, and Arkin all look like they have great comedic chemistry. I think it's worth checking out.
When you think about The Expendables, the first thing that usually comes to mind is its creator: Sylvester Stallone; so it's going to be strange if you remove Stallone from Expendables.

But according to Deadline, Stallone has exited The Expendables 4 in both writing and starring capacities, reportedly due to disagreements with Nu Image/Millennium chief Avi Lerner over the film’s script, director, and “certain qualitative elements of the film” including which VFX house to use for the effects. Stallone is nothing if not thorough, and is known to take a very hands on role in these kinds of films. He wrote the first three films himself and directed the first, and has seen himself as a face of this action series that revived many of the biggest action personalities of the 80s and 90s.

Where this leaves the future of the Expendables franchise is unclear. Stallone is said to have turned down a massive payday around $20 million for The Expendables 4, but in the wake of his Oscar-nominated turn in Creed was worried about creatively underwhelming audiences with a subpar Expendables sequel.

For his part, Lerner insists to Deadline that The Expendables 4 is not dead and has hope that Stallone will return, but other sources indicate he’s done. Back in 2014, Stallone admitted going PG-13 for The Expendables 3 was a mistake and promised a more violent fourth film, but beyond that we really didn’t have any details for what to expect in Expendables 4. The third film brought Harrison Ford and Mel Gibson into the mix, as well as new blood in the form of Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, and Glen Powell, but it’s unknown who was expected to fill out the Expendables 4 ensemble.

The Terminator franchise has not really stood up with a film decent enough to proudly stand alongside the first two films The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The sequels that followed have either been mediocre or boring.

The big news that may bring life to Terminator is all the rumor that James Cameron may be returning to the franchise. According to several sources, Skydance honcho David Ellison said that there will be a major announcement about the Terminator franchise coming in 2017. He essentially left the announcement at that but you can read his quotes from the interview right below.

Here’s what Ellison said during his interview with Steve:

“I will say we have resolved the future of the franchise and believe me its an incredibly bright future. I think where it’s going will be the continuation of what the fans really wanted since T2.”

“We have something this year that we will be announcing for the franchise. It’s something we’re incredibly excited about and we think is the direction it needs to head.”[
The weekend's almost here! If you're going to go out and watch a movie, you may wanna check these films that are opening this week...

Ghost in the Shell (2017)
In the near future, Major is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. This movie directed by Rupert Sanders (the director of "Snow White and the Huntsman" who made controversy because of his affair with star Kristen Stewart, which happened on the set of that film) and stars Scarlett Johansson and Takeshi Kitano is a remake of the monumental 1995 Japanese anime film based off a popular manga of the same title. My snap impression: Sure, why not. I am very curious as to how Hollywood would interpret with this timeless cyberpunk epic tale. If you happen to watch or to have watched the original anime film, check out the special appearance of a San Miguel Beer can in there; Pinoy beer represent!

Northern Lights: A Journey to Love
Charlie Sr. (Piolo Pascual) is a Filipino immigrant in Alaska who is living a carefree life. His life suddenly changes when he is tasked to take care of his estranged son, Charlie Jr. (Raikko Mateo), whom he had left behind in the Philippines. As he struggles to become a real father to his son, Charlie crosses paths with Angel (Yen Santos), a quirky Filipina who went to Alaska to find her lost mother. My snap impression: It looks like the typical "let's make a movie and ride on the fact that it's shot in Alaska as its main gimmick" I could be wrong. But I think it's kinda sickening to see those Pinoy movies whose whole schtick just surrounds on that one gimmick. But as I said: I could be wrong.

Carrie Pilby
Carrie (Bel Powley),a gifted woman who graduated from Harvard at 19, struggles to make sense of the world as it relates to morality, relationships, sex and leaving her New York apartment. Without a job and friends because of her unreasonably high standards, Carrie is told by her therapist to create a five-point plan to get herself on track.

Revenger a.k.a. The Assignment
After being double-crossed, a hit man becomes a hit woman (Michelle Rodriguez) with help from a rogue surgeon (Sigourney Weaver). Accompanied by a nurse named Johnnie, she sets out for revenge

Smurfs: The Lost Village
In this fully animated, all-new take on the Smurfs, a mysterious map sets Smurfette and her friends Brainy, Clumsy and Hefty on an exciting race through the Forbidden Forest leading to the discovery of the biggest secret in Smurf history. My snap impression: Probably awesome for kids. Finally, a smurfs movie set in the smurf world!

[RETURN TO MAIN PAGE]Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-572336906697144318.post-45369202676182689292017-03-28T23:30:00.000+08:002017-03-29T17:40:07.323+08:00ASEAN Film Festival in Geneva Kicks Off with Pinoy Film "Boses"

The opening of the 2017 ASEAN Film Festival was recently held at the United Nations Palais des Nations building with the film "Boses" kicking off the start of the festival. This is in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Among those who did the opening remarks for the event was Permanent Representative of the Philippine Mission to the United Nations Evan P. Garcia who spoke highly of the dynamic film industry in South East Asia and its footprints in the worldwide market. He adds that the ASEAN film industry now has many opportunities with a number of outstanding productions that have won attention at international film festivals, such as Cannes (France) and Busan (the Republic of Korea). Garcia added ASEAN nations have also been an alluring destination to foreign filmmakers who are impressed by the region’s magnificent landscapes, prosperity and creativeness.

The 2017 ASEAN Film Festival features films originated from ASEAN member states to share the diversity and way of life of the ASEAN community, cultivate a better understanding on their values and cultures and encourage and celebrate their film productions.

The opening film "Boses" is about a violinist named Ariel who offered violin lessons to Onyok, a child abused and traumatized by his father causing him to become mute. Through music, Ariel and Onyok develop a friendship and, in the process, Ariel realizes Onyok’s potential and talent for playing the violin.

"Boses" is directed by Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil, and stars Julian Duque, Coke Bolipata, Ricky Davao, Cherry Pie Picache. It garnered twenty-three (23) nominations from various Philippine-based film festivals and film awarding bodies, such as the 2008 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and the 2009 Gawad Urian Awards. It also won eight (8) awards in the 2009 Philippine Golden Screen Awards, and 2009 Philippine Star Awards for Movies.

The ASEAN Film Festival is held from 27 March to 7 April 2017 at Cinema (Room XIV), 1/F, Building A (Door 17) of the Palais des Nations. The films will screen at 12:30 p.m. everyday.

The ASEAN Film Festival will feature films originated from ASEAN Member States. The objectives of the ASEAN Geneva Film Festival 2017 include; Sharing the diversity and way of life of the ASEAN communities; Cultivating a better understanding on the values and cultures of ASEAN communities; Presenting ASEAN’s achievements and challenges in advancing socioeconomic developments of its people; Encouraging and celebrate film productions in ASEAN countries.

[Due to limited seating, those who do not hold a UN ground badge are kindly requested to register atacg2017@genevapm.ph indicating the movies they would like to attend 48 hours before the screening. It is looking to be the start of a new era in the mainstream film scene as SM Cinema is opening its doors to indie films with the launching of CineLokal.

This has long been announced by the Film Development Council of the Philippines chairperson Liza Diño, but now she has made the official annoucement which is a prelude to the launching of the project, which does include Iloilo on the project's scope. The following is the official announcement...
Strengthening its commitment to support Philippine cinema, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and SM Cinema launch Cine Lokal—a new cinema line that will house independent, award-winning films and FDCP programs in select SM Cinema branches across the country starting April 2017.

FDCP Chairperson and CEO Liza Diño and SM Lifestyle Entertainment, Inc. (SMLEI) President Edgar Tejerero will formalize the partnership as they sign the three-year contract at Cerchio Restaurant, Tomas Morato on March 24, 2017.

“Cine Lokal’s goal is two-fold: to provide independent filmmakers with a commercial venue for their films, thereby strengthening their experience and training on film marketing and distribution, and to create a culture of support and viewership among Filipinos nationwide. Independent films mirror our society’s milieu in the most meaningful and affective of ways and we are grateful to SM Cinema for this great opportunity for us to bring more choices of these films closer to our people,” said Chairperson Diño.
SM Megamall, SM North EDSA, SM Fairview, SM Iloilo, SM Southmall, SM Cebu, SM Bacoor, and SM Mall of Asia were chosen as the location of the eight dedicated cinemas to show FDCP-curated films throughout the duration of the partnership. To ensure the success of its newest venture, SM Cinema and FDCP have committed to work together from booking, licensing, up to the marketing of the films to be shown in Cine Lokal branches.

“Cine Lokal affirms our support for the Philippine film industry which includes our independent film producers. With the help of FDCP, we have an opportunity to expand our content and invite a new set of audience. Cine Lokal brings SM Cinema closer to its goal of becoming not only the largest, but the most diverse film exhibitor in the country,” Tejerero said.

Movie lovers and independent film enthusiasts alike can expect an exciting roster of award-winning, independent films at Cine Lokal starting April 2017.

In the press conference which was held last March 24, 2017, it was announced that Cine Lokal will officially begin April 19 and will run all year. The project will kick off with a Lenten season theme, highlighting the newly-restored classic Ishmael Bernal's "Himala", Mel Chionglo's "Iadya Mo Kami", and Ruben Marie Soriquez's "Of Sinners and Saints". There will be four screenings a day, and tickets will start with an introductary price of P120 a film, and will eventually have the standard P150 base price.
[RETURN TO MAIN PAGE]Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-572336906697144318.post-34747362202553192622017-03-24T00:00:00.000+08:002017-03-26T23:15:00.179+08:00Who will be Cable for Deadpool 2?

Ever since the first "Deadpool" movie teased about the inclusion of the character Cable for the sequel, there had been a lot of buzz on who could be the perfect actor to play the character. There had been many choices that have surfaced since.

Back at the beginning of March, there had been reports that the Oscar-nominated force of nature known as Michael Shannon had been in consideration for the role of Cable in 20th Century Fox’s "Deadpool" sequel, but that scheduling conflicts would be taking him out of the running. That left "Stranger Things" stand-out David Harbour as the frontrunner for the role. Now, the trades seem to be backing up the assertion that Shannon is/was in the mix, though few details beyond that are available.

THR says that Shannon is now the studio’s first choice, followed by Harbour; they also mention that the rumored interest Kyle Chandler was never a serious consideration. With "Deadpool 2" scheduled to shoot this summer in Vancouver, his commitment to writer-director Elizabeth Chomko‘s indie drama "What They Had" could complicate things since it shoots this spring. And speaking of scheduling, whoever signs on to play Cable will undoubtedly be contracted to appear as the character in the planned "X-Force" film, at the very least.

Brad Pitt was also eyed to take on the role and there was interest on both sides. As of right now he’s moved on, but since this role is very much in flux there’s the possibility that things could change. The actor may soon have his hands full producing and starring in World War Z 2 if that gets a greenlight from Paramount, but this would have been a massive casting coup for the superhero follow-up.

For me, the best and only choice should be Stephen Lang. You remember that big buff scary old villain in Avatar? Yes, that's him. I think he would be perfect as Cable. We last saw him in the film "Dont Breathe" as the scary blind guy that the annoying main characters are trying to steal from. Plus, the way he acts all intimidating and all deadly would be an amazing contrast with Ryan Reynolds' hilarious performance as Deadpool.

"Deadpool 2" will star Ryan Reynolds returning as the title character, this time for director David Leitch (co-director of John Wick). Domino will be played by Zazie Beetz. The possible release date is eyed for February 2018. [
RETURN TO MAIN PAGE]Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
