"The Search for Weng Weng" Iloilo Screening a Vibrant Success

Last August 7, 2014 Thursday evening 7:00 PM The documentary The Search for Weng Weng from Australian filmmaker Andrew Leavold was shown at the FDCP Cinematheque. And it was one of the most enjoyable and successful screening events that was held at the Iloilo FDCP Cinematheque. [hit the jump to continue]

The screening for "The Search for Weng Weng" is part of the documentary's Philippine tour this August which included Baguio, Dumaguete, and Cebu.

When we got to the event at around 6 PM, the Australian filmmaker, his partner and producer Daniel Palisa, and line producer Kristine Kintana (who is also best known as an actress who has appeared in several Lav Diaz movies) were already chilling out at the lobby. At first, we seem to have been a bit intimidated, but when they hit the stage to introduce themselves and to introduce the movie, they were buzzing with energy and charm that set the evening's incredibly cheerful and pleasant mood.

The Cinematheque was jampacked. And the crowd had a mixture of lovers of good movies, film junkies, students and kids who are curious of who or what this Weng Weng is, and even those who are old enough to have been around when Weng Weng was still popular during the early 80's. The screening of the movie had a very warm reception from the audience. The audience really responded well with the movie's fascinating tale of triumph and tragedy.  At one point, after the credits, the Australian filmmakers took footage of the audience cheering in applause for the movie; this footage will be included in the upcoming DVD for The Search for Weng Weng documentary.

The Q & A session that followed was vibrantly quite interactive; simply because the movie was indeed magnificent, and it was obviously easy for the audiences to get tickled by curiousity of asking about the many other off-camera aspects of the movie.

After the event, we later got to hangout with Iloilo City's filmmaking guests, along with other friends, and got to have a lot of colorful discussions over beer and (in my case) coffee. And yes, they will be visiting Iloilo City again.
