Guardians of the Galaxy Post-Credits Scene Explained

As a general staple in Marvel movies, there is always a post-credits stinger. And aside from the fact that a whole lot of critics gave the movie high praise, almost all of them agreed about one thing: that the post-credits stinger was disappointing, echoing the sentiment: THAT WAS IT? But let's get on to explain that post credit scene after the jump...

If you happen to be confused why you see some kind of Donald Duck-like character pop out of a Marvel universe movie, that's because we got a glimpse of a character who does belong in the Marvel universe, his name is Howard the Duck. "Howard the Duck? Wasnt there a movie of that character in the 80's?" Yes there was. And many fans were upset at that movie because they simply did not do it right. So, it's easy to guess that Howard the Duck is being done right this time. At least, for this scene, or this appearance.

Is that bad news? Will Marvel waste their energy to make a new Howard the Duck movie? Not necessarily. Simply because Howard the Duck is not within the range of plans that Marvel has set out to do yet. It's not even in the speculations and rumors realm. As far as we know, this appearance of Howard is simply a fun acknowledgement of his existence in this new Marvel cinematic Universe.

In the long run, it's possible we may see a Howard the Duck movie, but not in the immediate forseeable future. But who knows? Maybe after a week or two after his appearance in the Guardians of the Galaxy stinger, Marvel may possibly announce something related to him

WHO is HOWARD THE DUCK?
Howard the Duck is an ill-tempered, anthropomorphic, cigar-smoking Duck who was abducted from his home planet and is dropped on Planet Earth, into the Florida Everglades by the demonic Thog the Overmaster of the realm Sominus. Since then, he has gotten into adventures with Man-Thing, Spider-man, She-Hulk, even Ghost Rider, among many others. Howard's adventures are generally social satires, while a few are parodies of genre fiction with a metafictional awareness of the medium. His comicbook series is existentialist, and its main joke, according to Steve Gerber (one the writers who created the character, alongside Val Mayerik), is that there is no joke: "that life's most serious moments and most incredibly dumb moments are often distinguishable only by a momentary point of view." A point not shared by the creators of the generally-condemned 1986 Howard the Duck movie. Well, it's apparent that Marvel will make Howard's image better this time.
