The highly-acclaimed “REKORDER” screens at the FDCP Iloilo Cinematheque this week

This week, one of the most highly-anticipated indie films finally gets a screening here in Iloilo; Mikhail Red's "Rekorder". The movie will be shown from September 23 to 28, 2014 at the FDCP Cinematheque.

"Rekorder" tells the story of a former 1980’s film cameraman who now currently works as a movie pirate operating in present day Manila. He routinely smuggles a digital camcorder into movie theaters in order to illegally record films. One night he records something else... And the footage goes viral.

Speaking of viral, one of the footage scenes in the movie indeed went viral on the internet. The scene is a CCTV video of a person withdrawing money from the ATM who suddenly gets robbed by armed robbers at gunpoint. Those who shared the video thought that the footage was authentic. Mark Millar's STARLIGHT being Developed into a Movie

Mark Millar's six-part graphic novel mini-series "Starlight" is still ongoing (issue number five was just released last month), but Twentieth Century Fox is already picking it up for a movie adaptation. Gary Whitta, who has been hired to write one of the upcoming Star Wars standalone films to be directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards, has been hired to pen the script for this "Starlight" adaptation as well. No target release date has been announced yet.

"Starlight" taps on classic space opera sensibilities. Millar himself described it as a mash-up of Flash Gordon and The Dark Knight Returns. The story centers on Duke McQueen who, forty years ago, saved an alien world from destruction. Back on Earth, nobody believed his story. Now his kids are grown, his wife has passed on, and life has little to offer. Until the day a strange boy from the world he once saved makes an appearance, coaxing Duke to join him on one last adventure. Can Duke handle the leap from has-been to hero?

Lav Diaz and Why Indie Cinema Deserves More

Indie Cinema and the Metaphor of Knowing Real Value
by Reymundo Salao

Those who have some knowledge about Philippine cinema must know who Lav Diaz is. Perhaps one may not have seen one of his movies, but surely one should have heard about him. He's that Filipino filmmaker who makes these long epic movies that have won numerous awards in international film festivals. Just last month, Lav Diaz took home the prestigious Golden Leopard for best film for “From What Is Before” (Mula sa kung ano ang noon). On the other hand of the tale, it's quite sad that even after he and his crew brought the biggest honor the country has received so far in an A-list film festival, there was no hero's welcome or parade to celebrate their victory when they arrived back. Legendary announces King Kong Reboot with SKULL ISLAND

Legendary announced its plans to make a feature film based on the cinematic origins of King Kong, which is entitled "Skull Island" during this year’s San Diego Comic Con with an original draft of the script by Max Borenstein. Previous works have touched on the island, but staying on and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions. Jordan Vogt-Robers will helm the project, with Tom Hiddleston to star. Universal Pictures will distribute the film on November 4, 2016. [hit the jump to continue]

Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass reunite to bring back Jason Bourne

Universal Pictures is currently working on reuniting Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass for another Bourne movie. Initially, the plan was to make a follow-up to the Bourne Legacy, which starred Jeremy Renner, and to have it helmed by Justin Lin. The development of that follow-up was stalled when the studio focused on trying to get Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass on the Bourne franchise. But according to reports, the Renner spinoff is still in development with Lin. So does this mean that there will be two separate Bourne movies being developed side-by-side? Although I would want to see the Bourne universe to go back to the Philippines, sad to say that the Renner Bourne just felt like a filler episode, and will probably evaporate when the Damon/Greengrass Bourne movie will launch. The project is still under a long overdue development phase, but sources say that "Top Gun 2" will have a a storyline that highlights the relevance of old fashioned pilots in a war environment loaded with high-tech drones.
