Jamie Foxx Wants to be Spawn

Among the superheroes created in the 1990s, SPAWN is probably the one that embodies and stands as the posterboy for 90's comics; irreverent, hardcore, mysterious, and can sometimes be seen armed with really big guns. It was adapted into an immensely disappointing movie in the late 90s. Ever since that time, its creator Todd McFarlane has been working hard to redeem his creation and get a serious, hard-R-rating SPAWN movie. It looks like his chances of getting it made will be faring well this time, because Jamie Foxx has publicly expressed his wishes to take on the role of Spawn, if a new movie is to be made. Jamie Foxx has been aggressively pursuing the reboot. Will this be the push needed to get an R-Rated Spawn into theaters? [read the full article after the jump]

DC/WB Plans Superman-Batman Movie for 2015 and The Flash for 2016

It's no secret that DC/Warner Bros. has been desperately trying hard to catch up, cash in on the trend, and follow on the formula of Marvel's ultra-successful Avengers movie phenomenon. A Justice League movie has been planned and repetitiously failed to launch (what with the failure of Green Lantern and the unaired Wonder Woman TV series). Now, with the success of MAN OF STEEL, DC/Warner strikes while the iron is hot by following it up with a sequel that is a SUPERMAN-BATMAN movie to be released by 2015, and "tentatively" to be followed by a FLASH movie on 2016. And possibly a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie by 2017. [read more after the jump]

Gina Carano & Rob Liefeld working on bringing AVENGELYNE to the Big Screen

Gina Carano and comic book artist-writer Rob Liefeld are working together to develop a movie adaptation of Liefeld's comicbook creation AVENGELYNE with Carano as the title character.

Published in 1995 under Image Comics, AVENGELYNE is about an angel (Avengelyne) who is the most feared warrior in Heaven's Army. But she was banished from Heaven by God after being tricked into questioning his love for humans. Avengelyne was stripped of all her angelic abilities, other than her great strength and her blood, which, once extracted from her body, could be used as a weapon or a miracle once empowered by quoting verses from the Bible. Despite her new limitations, Avengelyne continues to battle the demons that she can find while on Earth. [full article after the jump]

The Sword, Graphic Novel by US-based Filipino Writer/Artists, set for a Film Adaptation

THE SWORD is a graphic novel by US-based Filipino writers and artists known as the Luna Brothers; Joshua Luna and Jonathan Luna. The novel is a fantasy story set in modern day about a young woman named Dara Brighton seeking revenge on a trio of siblings with unique abilities. Dara's conflict with the siblings revolves around, and is aided by, an unusual sword. Now, Lakeshore Entertainment and Hopscotch Features are setting their sights on a film adaptation of THE SWORD and has tapped X-Men screenWriter David Hayter (X-Men, X2, Watchmen, The Scorpion King) to pen the screenplay. Del Toro and Perlman want a Hellboy 3

Hellboy 3 is still having a good chance of getting made. Director Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman (who plays Hellboy) sat down with Legendary Pictures head Thomas Tull during a break from the San Francisco-based weekend press tour for Pacific Rim, and expressed their interest in continuing the Hellboy series. Sarah Gadon is Not Mary Jane Watson

A few days ago, we reported that Shailene Woodley who was originally set to play Mary Jane Watson in the next Spider-man movie will be replaced. Soon thereafter news came up that Sarah Gadon was set to join the cast for Amazing Spider-man 2, in a role not revealed, but it made sense to most that she was cast to fill in the void left by Woodley. Now, Gadon has come out in her twitter account that she will Not be playing Mary Jane, stating:

" I will not be playing MJ in Spider-Man. I have a role in the film, but it is not that one :) "

LOCKE & KEY to be developed into a Film

LOCKE & KEY is a horror comic book series/graphic novel created by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez that has recently been picked up by Universal Pictures to be developed and adapted into a movie. Writers and producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek and Transformers) will be producing this adaptation.

The graphic novel centers on three siblings who return to their family home in Massachusetts following their father’s murder. There, they discover that the house is full of secrets when they start finding magical keys which hold impossible powers such as turning people into ghosts, or being able to erase someone's memories. They are not the only ones who know of the keys; a demonic creature known as Dodge is also after the keys, with the goal of opening the Black Door, which will allow the demons of hell to enter our world. Mary Jane Watson may be removed from Amazing Spider-man 2; Updated: Has a New Mary Jane Watson been Found?

The Spider-man character Mary Jane Watson (previously played by Kirsten Dunst in the Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire Spider-man movies) was supposed to make her appearance in the upcoming Amazing Spider-man 2. But now, it looks like she will be a character that will be shelved until we get to part 3. The role is played by Shailene Woodley, a role that is very important to the Spider-man mythos, because she ends up as Spidey's leading lady, she is Spidey's Lois Lane.

Her fate in the cutting room floor may be caused by the fact that her appearance in this movie will actually be a mere set-up for her to become the lead lady in the next movie (part 3). That is the initial idea behind it. But it may not be the character, but the actress. Now the director Marc Webb himself has come out revealing that the role of Mary Jane might be recast. FABLES set for a Film Adaptation

One of the best comic books, and one of the most highly-praised comics series (and winner of 14 Eisner Awards), to come out of DC's Vertigo is FABLES. The series deals with various characters from fairy tales and folklore – referring to themselves as "Fables" – who have been forced out of their Homelands by "The Adversary" who has conquered the realm. The Fables have traveled to our world and formed a clandestine community in New York City known as Fabletown. Fables who are unable to blend in with human society (such as monsters and anthropomorphic animals) live at "the Farm" in upstate New York. Now, FABLES is set to be adapted into a film. Luke Evans officially been chosen for The Crow

After the long search for the right actor, and after around 5 years of being in development hell, production for the restart/reboot of THE CROW looks like its finally going to fly, now that an actor has officially been chosen for the part... Luke Evans (better known for his roles in Immortals and the 2010 Clash of the Titans) has been officially chosen as the new role to take on The Crow. Recently, there had been initial reports stating that Alexander Skarsgard and Tom Hiddleston were being considered for the part.[READ FULL STORY AFTER THE JUMP]

Alexander Skarsgard is eyed for The Crow

It was previously reported that Tom Hiddleston (Avengers' and Thor's Loki) was in early talks to star in director F. Javier Gutierrez’s remake of The Crow [read report here].  Well now Deadline is crying foul over the previous report, claiming that Hiddleston’s involvement amounted to “a simple conversation” and nothing more.  The outlet instead reports that it’s True Blood star Alexander Skarsgard who is the top contender to lead The Crow, noting that there’s no formal offer yet but “it’s Skarsgard’s role if he wants it.” [read more after the jump]

ABS-CBN Acquires the Rights to Darna

DARNA is now a Kapamilya, as ABS-CBN has acquired the rights to the iconic, classic comicbook character; Mars Ravelo’s DARNA. ABS-CBN signed a deal with the late Mars Ravelo’s daughter Rita Ravelo-de la Cruz and son Rex Ravelo, for exclusive rights to the komiks creation. According to ABS-CBN News, aside from “Darna,” the deal with the Ravelos granted the network exclusive rights to their father’s other well-loved works, like “Dyesebel,” “Captain Barbell” and 10 other titles that are yet to be specified.

The report further notes that while the network had the liberty to choose who would play Darna, the family would be consulted when it came to “creative decisions.” That, he said, would have to be a collaboration. [read the entire article after the jump]

Daredevil's Rights are now back in Marvel Studio's hands

Marvel Studios has secured the rights to the Marvel comics character Daredevil, whose rights was previously owned by 20th Century Fox. The 2003 Daredevil movie was actually a failure as it was terribly maligned by critics, it was despised by fans of the Daredevil comics, and did not even a spawn cult fanbase big enough to fuel interest in following it. Everybody, including Affleck himself, were interested in doing something darker with it, but the big men at the studios do not seem to know what to do with it.

After a very long period of trying to develop it, time has ran out for 20th Century Fox. A sequel or reboot should have to start filming by 10 October 2012, or else the rights to the Daredevil franchise would revert from Fox back to Marvel. And so it did; This month, Kevin Feige confirmed that the rights for Daredevil returned to Marvel Studios and Disney, opening the possibility of including the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Crow Returns, with Tom Hiddleston?

The Crow is a franchise that has repeatedly been attempted to revive, but often never does fly and soar as planned. But in recent Crow-related activities, Tom Hiddleston (Loki, from The Avengers movie and Thor) is in formal talks to become the next Crow protagonist. Producers Ed Pressman, Kevin Misher and Ryan Kavanaugh have met with Hiddleston for a makeup test, and in the next few days, he is expected to do a formal test with filmmakers including director F. Javier Gutierrez (Spanish director whose film "Tres Dias"was lauded in a number of international sci-fi fim festivals). Y: THE LAST MAN is now in active development

New Line Cinema has found a director for its long-gestating adaptation of the Brian K. Vaughan graphic novel Y: The Last Man.  The dystopian story centers on Yorick, the last surviving man after an epidemic kills every other mammal with a Y chromosome.  We reported last September that the project was a priority for the studio and they were vetting possible directors.  The pressure was on to find the right person for the pic, as a number of candidates have come and gone including DJ Caruso (Disturbia), who was attached to the project for a considerable amount of time.  Now that director search has seemingly ended, as the studio has settled on commercials helmer Dan Trachtenberg to bring the adaptation to fruition. 

Kick-Ass 2 to start shooting this year

The sequel to the 2010 black comedy superhero movie Kick-Ass is now well into production and will start shooting September this year. Aaron Johnson confirmed that he would reprise his titular role in the sequel. Chloë Grace Moretz who plays Hit-Girl and Christopher Charles Mintz-Plasse who plays the Red Mist are expected to reprise their roles as well. On the other hand, director Matthew Vaughn (who still acts as producer for the sequel) will be having his hands full on the sequel to the successful X-Men: First Class but he has chosen Jeff Wadlow, who also co-wrote the script along with Vaughn, to direct Kick-Ass 2. The sequel will maintain that Hard R rating.

Universal now plans a KICK-ASS sequel

While comic creator Mark Millar has been touting the “greenlight” for Kick-Ass 2 for years now, it turns out that production may finally get started this year.  Deadline reports that Universal is in talks to make a sequel to Matthew Vaughn’s excellent 2010 pic Kick-Ass.  Vaughn is currently busy developing a sequel to X-Men: First Class, so Jeff Wadlow will be taking over directing duties this time around.  Wadlow, who wrote and directed 2005’s Cry_Wolf and directed the 2008 fighting-centered Never Back Down, wrote the script for Vaughn who I’m assuming will be producing.

The official release date of The Avengers is fast coming, and the hype and excitement is burning hot. While people are starting to mark their calendars, Syowing's spies have already taken a peek at Robinson's Movieworld's screening skeds for The Avengers. AVENGERS will be released in Philippine theaters on APRIL 25, 2012 [wednesday]; while it will have its US opening on May 4, 2012. Yes, we will have our screening here in advance of the US release.
