The Future of Spider-man Movies Look Uncertain

Changes are going on at Sony Pictures with regards to the Spider-man movies. Screenwriter/producer Roberto Orci, who penned The Amazing Spider-man 2 with former writing partner Alex Kurtzman, will not be involved with part 3 or any of the Spider-man spin-offs anymore. Orci was initially reported to be part of Sony's plans to move on to part 3 and its spin-offs which include a Venom and The Sinister Six movies. Reports from IGN add that Alex Kurtzman, on the other hand, will remain at the studio to write and direct the Venom spin-off. [hit the jump to continue]

Sony Developing Spin-Off Movies for Venom and The Sinister Six

Sony seems to be buzzed by their own Spider-man universe and so they have been planning spin-off movies for Venom and for The Sinister Six. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (who wrote the Transformers movies), and Jeff Pinkner will be writing Venom, and Kurtzman will direct. Drew Goddard (who co-wrote and directed The Cabin in the Woods) will be writing the screenplay and will possibly direct The Sinister Six. It should also be noted that Goddard is also attached to write and direct Marvel’s 10-episode Daredevil series for Netflix. [hit the jump to continue]

LOCKE & KEY to be developed into a Film

LOCKE & KEY is a horror comic book series/graphic novel created by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez that has recently been picked up by Universal Pictures to be developed and adapted into a movie. Writers and producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek and Transformers) will be producing this adaptation.

The graphic novel centers on three siblings who return to their family home in Massachusetts following their father’s murder. There, they discover that the house is full of secrets when they start finding magical keys which hold impossible powers such as turning people into ghosts, or being able to erase someone's memories. They are not the only ones who know of the keys; a demonic creature known as Dodge is also after the keys, with the goal of opening the Black Door, which will allow the demons of hell to enter our world. The Mummy gets a reboot

Things are moving rather quickly on Universal’s reboot of The Mummy.  It was announced back in May that Star Trek screenwriters/prolific producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman would be developing reboots of both The Mummy and Van Helsing, with Tom Cruise attached to star in the latter.  In subsequent interviews Kurtzman hinted at approaching the reboots with a darker tone than their original counterparts, and sure enough, Underworld and Total Recall director Len Wiseman is now being lined up to take the helm of The Mummy.

The script for the Mummy reboot is being written by Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts, and Wiseman tells Deadline that he connected with the project’s darker take:

“When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head, the period tale, the old monster, but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well. It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.” [hit the jump to continue]
