Sad news for the Filipino Film Community. Mario O'Hara, one of the country's most respected award-winning Filipino film director, film producer and screenwriter passed away at the age of 68, yesterday June 26, 2012.
O'Hara who had been receiving chemotherapy due to cancer, was rushed to the hospital on June 20. On Tuesday, his sister-in-law, Peewee O'Hara, said Mario died at San Juan de Dios hospital due to complications from acute leukemia.O'Hara is known for his sense of realism often with dark but realistic social messages. A native of Zamboanga, he collaborated frequently with Lino Brocka during the 1970s.
O'Hara wrote the screenplay for Brocka's Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang (You Were Judged and Found Wanting, 1974), about life in a small provincial town. O'Hara's 2004 film Babae sa Breakwater addressed issues of poverty in Manila and was met with some considerable success. He also directed several iconic films such as Insiang, Mortal, and Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos (3 Godless Years, 1976) which is one of the best and most memorable movies in Filipino Film History.
In 2010, he filmed Ang Paglilitis ni Andres Bonifacio (The Trial of Andres Bonifacio), which entered the Director's Showcase category of the Cinemalaya film festival. It was his last movie.
When not doing films, he wrote, directed and acted in a number of plays. He has collaborated with the Tanghalang Pilipino and Philippine Educational Theater Alliance theater groups.
His most recent work was being the co-director, along with Jon Red, of the TV5 mini-series "Sa Ngalan ng Ina" which was a political drama and soap opera that starred Nora Aunor and Christopher de Leon.
