Chuckie is back with Child's Play 6; which is direct-to-DVD

Chucky is back! The talking, living, killing doll is once again full of life to spread death around with a new Child's Play movie to add to this almost-20-year old series. Child's Play 6 entitled Curse of Chucky is a direct-to-DVD sequel though. Meaning, it will not have a cinematic release. But then again, in the past, there are several direct-to-DVD movies that have had cinematic release in other countries like here in the Philippines. But in this torrent age, I'm not so sure they will bother with a full cinematic release here.[READ MORE AFTER THE JUMP]

If you are a serious fan of the Chucky series, you'd be delighted to find out that Brad Dourif is returning yet again to voice the ever-killing Chucky. Some of you may recognize Dourif also playing Grima Wormtongue in the Lord of the Rings movies. This new Chucky movie will also be written, produced, and directed by Don Mancini, who has written every entry thus far, and directed 2004’s Seed of Chucky. The logline for Curse of Chucky is as follows:

“Chucky arrives to wreck havoc within a family that’s regrouped for a funeral. In the wake of her mother’s passing, a young woman – in a wheelchair since birth – is forced to put up with her sister, brother-in-law, niece and their nanny as they say their goodbyes to mother. When people start turning up dead, the fearless Nica discovers the culprit might be a “strange doll” she was sent a couple of days earlier.”

The plan is to take the series back to its earlier, darker routes.  The campiness of Seed of Chucky and Bride of Chucky will be toned down considerably, with an emphasis on making the franchise scary again. This sounds like good news to fans of the franchise and of horror movies alike.

If you ask me, I think it would be best to always make Chucky look like its default smiling doll state, so as to make the horror more freaky. Chucky's evil look has become too overused that it looks like a parody of itself now. For now, my optimisms about this movie are high, regardless if its direct-to-DVD.

Production is set to begin this September.
