At the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Robert Downey Jr. said he and Marvel were in the middle of negotiations for Iron Man 4. "I know there's going to be a bunch more Marvel movies," he said. "And they have big ideas of how to do it best and we're in the middle of negotiation..." Ellen then asked "So, yes?" which led Downey to reply "Okay, yes!"
Without even having seen the actual video of the interview, some of you can already tell that it was a hasty and clumsy reply of something that seemed to have no firm finality.
Downey laying out the actualy case of the matter at the Letterman show obviously indicates that he does realize that his statement was without something concrete to back upon, and he had the responsibility to clear it out as soon as he can.
Downey's reply at the Letterman show was:
“Just between us, no — but I’m going to do other stuff with Marvel. I’m still going to be involved with Marvel and there’s going to be plenty of other fun stuff.”
...which means that although Iron Man 4 may not be possibly be a go, it does not mean that the doors have closed between him, the Iron Man suit, and Marvel.
What this does is actually bring us to square one, which is: we are all not sure yet what will happen. It is, for now, between Downey and Marvel if the possibility would go in either directions:
1. He will still be working with Marvel, but not for another Iron Man movie;
2. He will still be Iron Man, only for other movies (such as Avengers), but not for another Iron Man movie;
3. He will still be in the Marvel movies, but not as Iron Man anymore;
4. Or they could finally agree to work on an Iron Man 4
As I said, we're back to square one; Not unless there's gonna be an official confirmation from Downey and Marvel (and not just a half-baked "Okay, yes" response), it's still unclear if Iron Man 4 will happen.
