WARCRAFT Plot Details Revealed; will Center More on the Classic Warcraft Storylines

WARCRAFT is definitely one of the biggest, highly anticipated movies, currently being developed. Duncan Jones, via the website Bleeding Cool, has recently revealed some details about what we can expect from WARCRAFT. [hit the jump to continue]

According to the report, WARCRAFT will be a “full-blooded fantasy” movie in the vein of John Milius‘ Conan the Barbarian and The Lord of the Rings. Fans of the older Warcraft games/chapter (such as me) will be delighted to hear that the movie will focus on the events from the real time strategy iterations from the mid-90s in order to leave room for future installments to go to the stories presented in later games. In my opinion, this allows from the gradual transition of just a Human versus Orc war, into the much more complicated multi-race wars of the later Warcraft chapters. Meaning; No Lich Kings or Night Elves, not yet for now at least.

In the upcoming WARCRAFT movie, the main character is Khadgar, a young consul to the Kirin Tor senate, rulers of the city of Dalaran. He is tasked with investigating a series of crimes, but his journey will take him beyond the city.

One of the juicy roles could be Khadgar’s mentor, Medivh.  Bleeding Cool describes the character as “Not quite Gandalf meets Captain Jack Sparrow, he’s actually a more morally complex character than will be at first revealed. Expect him to be a scene stealer, too.”  Medivh’s enemy is Lothar, “The Lion of Azeroth, leader of the King’s Army.”  Bleeding Cool's sources say that they could see Dwayne Johnson in the role, but that a less burly actor like Mark Strong could still “carry just the right amount of pride and gravity.”  As for the other major human roles, there’s the King and his Lady in supporting parts.

On the other hand, there will be plenty of orcs in the movie, and their story will be intimately entwined with that of Medivh. Fans can also expect to see dwarves, trolls, elves, revenants, and wraiths.

The film will be straight up fantasy action adventure, filled with magic, prophecies, and ancient artifacts. Just as much as The Lord of the Rings movies have become a phenomenon, expect this adaptation to create the same phenomenon.

Personally, I am glad that the movie is taking the route of adapting aspects of the classic games first (obviously because I loved the earlier Warcraft 2 game better), this way, the gradual steps allows for it not to blow their wad on the first movie.
