It looks like another case of a movie being re-scheduled at the very last minute, causing everybody who's planning to watch the movie get blueballs. The movie THIS IS THE END was initially originally scheduled for a July 17 release here in the Philippines. But then it was later re-scheduled to July 31. Now, we all got surprised to find the movie NOT opening anywhere in the Philippines this week. Word spread that the film was re-scheduled to September 11. [hit the jump to continue]
Unfortunately, this is kind of thing happens all the time in our local theater system. But it's interesting to note that THIS IS THE END is locally released by Columbia Pictures Philippines. Earlier this year, we also had problems with Columbia Pictures Philippines for making the Evil Dead remake be shown exclusively only to Ayala theaters, thereby excluding places like Iloilo City which has no Ayala Cinema [read THAT report here].
I really dont think there is anything wrong at all about setting a movie late from its original release date. But whenever they do this fickle re-scheduling habit at the very last minute, it disappoints audiences a lot. And with a movie like THIS IS THE END which is now set on September, which is three months from its original schedule, some will just gladly embrace piracy.
