Keanu Reeves' Directorial Endeavor with MAN OF TAI CHI

We've seen him kick ass in the Matrix movies, and be a bad-ass in Constantine. But we've never really seen Keanu Reeves be THE bad guy, nor have we seen him be the director. Now we get to see that in the movie MAN OF TAI-CHI.

Keanu Reeves might possibly go through an evolution of reputation as he is about to show the world what he can do as a director with his directorial film debut in this movie. MAN OF TAI CHI is about a young martial artist's unparalleled Tai Chi skills, and how he suddenly finds himself in the middle of a highly lucrative underworld fight club.

Tiger Chen, who was part of the Matrix stunt team, stars as the lead in this movie. While Reeves sheds off his former image of being the goody-goody good guy, so that this time, he co-stars as the bad guy. The film will also include cast members Karen Mok (So Close), Simon Yam (Ip Man 1 and 2) and Iko Uwais (The Raid: Redemption).

MAN OF TAI CHI is shot in both Mandarin and English, Reeves, in an interview with Collider, explains:
“We want to do it in Chinese and English, do it as kind of a co-production with CFG perhaps, which is a Chinese film group, kind of a studio. It’s tricky.”

The legendary Yuen Woo-Ping is the film’s action choreographer. That means that the movie is pretty loaded with hardcore martial arts action (to those unfamiliar with Woo-Ping, he's the long-time fight choreographer who choreographed The Matrix movies, Kill Bill, Fist of Legend, and also directed such timeless movies as Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master). Reeves further elaborates:
“There’s 18 fights. We’ve timed it out. It’s about 40 minutes of fighting. I want to make a good, solid kung fu movie. Good story, good plot—but let’s get some good kung fu going!”

MAN OF TAI-CHI premiered in 2013 with showings at the Beijing Film Festival in April and Cannes Film Festival in May. The work was awarded in Beijing and praised by recognized director of action genre films, John Woo. It is not yet set for release in the U.S., but it is already set for release here in the Philippines on July 17, 2013.
