Independence day Sequels being developed

Roland Emmerich must have ran out of ideas for disaster movies that he's going back to one of the movies that had first generated his career. Emmerich is planning a sequel for his 1996 alien invasion movie: INDEPENDENCE DAY. Not just one, but two sequels. And the title of these sequels will be... (you better swallow whatever it is youre eating first before reading it) it's title is: ID Forever Parts One and Two [read the full article if this plan will materialize, after the jump]

Ever since early this year, Emmerich has already gone on record about his plans to continue the storyline of INDEPENDENCE DAY. And even though he plans 2 more sequels, 20th Century Fox has, for now, scribbled July 3, 2015 in its diary as the date for the first of those planned new movies.

“I think they decided to only do one first.” says Emmerich. And while Emmerich and Writer-Producer Dean Devlin do indeed seem to have mapped out a two-film story arc, the director’s use of the word “they” sounds like Fox wants to see how well Independence Day 2 does first before giving the greenlight to a further sequel, which is understandable.  After all, it’s been two decades since the first film hit theaters.

So far, concrete details on the plot or possible actor involvement are hard to come by, with Bill Pullman insisting he’ll be back, and we do wonder if Jeff Goldblum will be returing to his role. What we do know is that Will Smith wont be returning for this sequel. Fox was moving forward with or without Smith anyway, but Emmerich has confirmed it saying:
“Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much. We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film [in the script] and the other half people who are new.”

Like a childish geek infant, I loved INDEPENDENCE DAY when it came out in 1996, but they should at least address and explain that really stupid plot element of installing a computer virus to an alien ship, in the sequel. That was really the one very big part of it that made the movie all dumb. Dumb or not, the film may have some box office potential.

Emmerich will be busy doing more promotion for White House Down soon, so we’d expect him to begin talking up his ideas for the new Independence Day. Whether his latest chatter about the alien race following up a distress call from the original mother ship and facing down a technologically advanced human race pans out remains to be seen.

This Independence Day sequel, or rather entitled (trying hard not to laugh) IDForever. is set for a July 3, 2015 release sked. White House Down, meanwhile, arrives in Philippine theaters July 3 this year.
