According to Empire Online, this new Crow was kickstarted by Stephen Norrington in 2009, with the Blade director planning to shoot his own screenplay, which would have taken place in Detroit and the American south-west. Nick Cave then wrote a draft in 2010, before Norrington walked over the usual creative differences with the studio. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) signed on in early 2011, beating Gutierrez to the gig, but when Fresnadillo moved on later the same year, Gutierrez was back in the game.
During the Norrington days, Mark Wahlberg was considered as our possible new Draven, and names in the hat since then have included Bradley Cooper, Channing Tatum, James McAvoy, Alexander Skarsgård and Tom Hiddleston.
The story of The Crow follows the tragic tale of a young man named Eric Draven who, along with his girlfriend/fiancée named Shelley were assaulted by a gang of thugs, and witnessed how Shelley was beaten and raped to death, before he himself was also killed. Eric is resurrected by a Crow and sought vengeance against those who tormented and killed Shelley, and the wicked forces that get in his way.Based on the James O'Barr graphic novel / comicbook of the same title, the 1994 THE CROW movie was directed by Alex Proyas, and starred Brandon Lee in the role in which he died in (up till now, this event remains one of the eeriest mysteries in film history). The movie became a cult phenomenon, and inspired a legion of followers, from goths to just typical everyday people; The Crow and his look became very influential, not only in its time, but up till now. It was followed by a 1996 sequel which was forgettable, and all the rest of the other sequels were just plain awful (plus the 1998 TV series that nobody seemed to be interested in) . The Crow franchise drowned into obscurity, attempts for a revival never went anywhere. Directors like Stephen Norrington and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and actors like James McAvoy were once considered to take on The Crow. But attempts took the development back into development limbo.
