The World of Warcraft loses Raimi; hires Blood Diamond writer Charles Leavitt

The Journey into the World of Warcraft continues
by Reymundo Salao

At this point, everybody knows that Sam Raimi will not be doing the film adaptation of THE WORLD OF WARCRAFT because he has focused his attention on directing OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL instead. Yeah, it sucks, doesn't it? ...that Raimi will not be directing the fantasy epic and chose the Wizard of Oz prequel instead. But that doesn't mean that the W.o.W. movie wont be made; it's still a go. I don't think Legendary Entertainment will want to miss the opportunity to strike a film adaptation of it while its fame is still massively popular.
Legendary Entertainment has announced that a script has been drafted by Saving Private Ryan writer Robert Rodat, and Blood Diamond screenwriter Charles Leavitt has been brought in to do some rewrites on it. He is also the writer of the upcoming fantasy pic The Seventh Son, starring Jeff Bridges.

With Raimi out of the picture, many are surely going to be curious who would be most ideal person to helm as director of this adaptation. I'm sure that fans will be fantasizing Ridley Scott, Guillermo Del Toro, or even Peter Jackson for the project. Jackson is very busy with all things concerning Middle Earth, especially now that The Hobbit will be a trilogy instead of just a 2-part movie, Scott doesn't seem to give a shit about video/pc games, and maybe Guillermo Del Toro will, at some time, say that he might direct it. But come on, Del Toro says a lot of shit that he doesn't really commit to. Let's just please pray that this project does not fall in the hands of Paul Anderson of the Resident Evil series.

Practically and realistically, the directors that I think may have a higher chance of being hired are the not-so-rockstar-status directors like Andrew Adamson of the first two Chronicles of Narnia movies, the first two Shrek movies, and the director of the upcoming Cirque Du Soleil film Worlds Away; he seems to be the perfect choice. And perhaps to be considered is Rupert Sanders who was kind of a breakthrough director with his Snow White and the Huntsman. My personal choice is Neil Marshall, whose work in Doomsday (he also directed Centurion, Dog Soldiers, and The Descent) was really something that showed us that he could be a kickass genre director that could create some mean hardcore medieval action.
