Dwayne Johnson as DC's Lobo?

Dwayne Johnson is now becoming one of Hollywood's larger-than-life action heroes. But if ever he was to play a superhero, who would it be? He's too big to be Superman, he's too small to be the Hulk, he's too fun to be the Punisher; well, just give him the role of the big DC comics anti-hero: LOBO! Is it just some kind of fan rumor? Or are the studios really working on ways for him to become the dangerously zany alien anti-hero?

The rumor began when a fan tweeted to Johnson that he’d like to see the star in the role, and Johnson responded, “Funny U say that…”  Today, he has added a bit more fuel to the fire, by tweeting about the rumor he started:

“Rumors of me possibly playing LOBO are true. [Producer] Joel Silver and [director] Brad Peyton working on it now. That could be fun…”

Johnson is one of the very few actors out there who matches Lobo's physique, and is probably the only actor (in his size) who will be able to act out the crazy personality of Lobo.

Lobo is blue-skinned alien who works as an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. Introduced as a hardened, rarely-used hardboiled villain in the 1980s, the character remained in limbo until his revival as an anti-hero biker in the early 1990s. The character enjoyed a short run as one of DC’s most popular characters throughout the 1990s. This version of Lobo was intended to be an over-the-top parody of Marvel Comics superhero Wolverine. I guess we'll wait for maybe at the most half a year before an official announcement is made. With the Colorado massacre, there might be some risks involving the degree of violence that a Lobo movie could entail. Let's just hope that whatever alterations there be; it could still have the real essence of who or what Lobo is.

With the exception of the Batman movie series (which is now coming to a conclusion, and awaiting a reboot/restart), the DC line of superhero movies & TV (the failed Wonder Woman pilot) have been a failure. The Man of Steel will crack a shot next year at pulling DC up near the level of Marvel and its Avengers success. I wonder if Lobo will be that unexpected movie that will, in one way or another, open the doors to a Justice League movie. Although he is not a part of the Justice League, he is part of the DC universe and has appeared in some episodes of the Justice League TV series.

It's not the first time Lobo was attempted to be given a film. In September 2009, Warner Bros. announced that Guy Ritchie would direct a live-action adaptation featuring the comic book character. Variety described the premise: "Lobo is a seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero who drives a pimped out motorcycle, and lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc. Lobo teams with a small town teenage girl to stop the creatures." Ritchie was scheduled to begin production of Lobo in early 2010 and bring an "irreverent, gruff tone" to the film as he did with previous films Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. The studio was aiming for a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. In early 2010 it was reported that Ritchie had left the project in order to pursue working on a sequel to his hit film Sherlock Holmes instead. The future of the Lobo feature film project is currently undetermined. Deadline reports that Brad Peyton will write and direct the film. That pretty much went nowhere. Let's hope this time, with none other than the Rock involved, his star-power could make Lobo go places this time.
