Sony Plans A Female-Led "21 JUMP STREET" Spin-Off; and Sony's Desperate Moves

Aside from a "23 Jump Street" starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, having already green-lit, Sony is branching out its "21 JumpStreet" franchise with a female-led spin-off. And it's going to be given a dual-track development in terms of the script. [hit the jump to continue]

This female-version "21 Jump Street" will be written by Broad City's Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs. In addition, "Bob's Burgers" scribes Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux have also been hired to write the film as well. However, that's not to mean that they'll be working with Aniello and Downs. Quite the contrary. Reports state that they've been tasked with writing a completely separate script for the film. Sony will then look at the two scripts and decide which one they'll proceed with.

Sony's Desperate Road
Ever since last year, Sony has been going through a lot of challenges which has perhaps been the reason why it has been trying to emulate the Marvel films tactic of establishing expanded universe. But their efforts have been pretty futile. They were first trying to expand the Spider-man movies with spin-offs which were the supposed Sinister Six movie, Venom movie, and a Spider-man movie which will focus on its female characters. Those never materialized because of the box-office and critical failure of "The Amazing Spider-man 2".

"Ghostbusters" is another property that Sony hopes to cash in on; we're not only going to expect a new "Ghostbusters" movie... we're also expecting a spin-off, all-female Ghostbusters movie. It's an unnecessaary and ridiculous extension of the Ghostbusters franchise... but yes; it's happening.

Then there's the fact that Sony's Rights over the James Bond property expires after "Spectre" which will come out November this year. Sony will have to fight tooth and nail (actually: spend bigtime) to win those rights back. Sony's other big franchise properties are the "Resident Evil" movies which had dried up, especially when Sony itself caused its delay. The other one, "Underworld" had also dried up and is currently up for a mild-reboot, along with plans to branch out with spin-offs.

That does not end there. Let's go back to "21 Jump Street"... In an effort to hit two birds with one stone, Sony was also planning to conjure up a cross-over movie which will connect the "21 Jump Street" universe with the "Men in Black" universe. Ridiculous? Nothing it ridiculous when: 1. You've still got audiences that will go for dumb flicks (that's why the Transformers movies are still successful) and 2. You're desperate for a franchise success.
