Sony set for an Animated Spider-man Film

Tom Rothman, chairman of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, has announced that Sony is set to make an animated Spider-man film, and it will be masterminded by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller, the directors of "The Lego Movie", "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs", and "21 and 22 Jump Street". The film is set for release on July 20, 2018. [hit the jump to continue]

This animated film will not be connected with the live-action Spider-Man universe, and the planned collaboration with the the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This film is announced to be "taking Spider-Man back to his graphic roots with the first-of-its-kind animated Spider-Man feature" as announced by Rothman. Lord & Miller are masterminding the project, writing the treatment and producing the film. This also has Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Pascal also serving as producers.

Although known for being producer of great serious dramas, Rothman has been known to hate superhero movies. He personally blocked a Deadpool film and refused to allow Sentinels to be used in an X-Men film. Like, he said in a meeting 'no giant robots.' Rothman became famous among nerds for micromanaging "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" to the point where he demanded sets be repainted without telling director Gavin Hood. And with Avi Arad on the side, who is also known for clashing heads with director Sam Raimi during the Tobey Mcguire run of Spider-man, this all seems like a Spider-man film with a shaky future.

But then again, you have here Phil Lord and Chris Miller who are both wonder workers, and can possibly turn whatever bad ideas those producers want, into something that can work out for the audiences and the fans. If it does not work out, at least we can sleep in the fact that it's not connected with the Marvel Cinematic Universe

As previously announced, Spider-Man will next appear in a live-action Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, a live-action film being produced by Kevin Feige at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago.
