Disney loses John Carter rights

Walt Disney's adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's "John Carter" was a massive critical and box office disappointment. Which obviously led to Disney's rights to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter series of sci-fi novels, being reverted back to Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., which intends on moving forward with further films. [hit the jump to continue]

Disney had originally hoped for their John Carter movie to spin into a blooming sci-fi series franchise. But there was really something wrong their version (perhaps the set designs were too outlandish for audiences? Personally I hated the look and the actor portraying the title character himself), that was obviously why critics and mainstream audiences did not really respond to it positively. We should hope that Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. will take the John Carter franchise to studios and filmmakers that would do the franchise justice. A statement from Burroughs, Inc. says:
“We will be seeking a new partner to help develop new adventures on film as chronicled in the eleven Mars novels Burroughs wrote. This adventure never stops. Along with a new TARZAN film in development by Warner Bros., we hope to have JOHN CARTER OF MARS become another major franchise to entertain world-wide audiences of all ages.”

Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter series of novels are among the pioneer and original sci-fi novels that have been a major influence on other science fiction/fantasy tales through the 20th century, including Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Superman, Adam Strange, Dune, Warp!, Den, and Star Wars to name just a few. The movie Avatar was inspired by John Carter of Mars. According to Avatar's creator, James Cameron, “With Avatar, I thought, Forget all these chick flicks and do a classic guys’ adventure movie, something in the Edgar Rice Burroughs mold, like John Carter of Mars—a soldier goes to Mars.”
