Robocop (2014) is a remake of the 1987 sci-fi action classic of the same title, which became a phenomenon in the late 80's and spawned several sequels and media spin-offs. The story centers on an honest cop who died and became resurrected by a robotics company to become the ultimate law-enforcement cyborg.
Our Take: Actually our hopes toward this remake are not so high, but we'll be watching it anyway out of curiosity because we're really big fans of the original. Plus, we still have some hope that our pessimisms toward this movie would be proven wrong.
American Hustle is a crime comedy-drama directed by David O. Russell, from a screenplay written by Eric Warren Singer and Russell, loosely based on the FBI ABSCAM operation of the late 1970s and early '80s. It stars Christian Bale and Amy Adams as two con artists who are forced by an FBI agent (Bradley Cooper) to set up an elaborate sting operation on corrupt politicians, including the mayor of Camden, New Jersey (Jeremy Renner). Jennifer Lawrence plays the unpredictable wife of Bale's character.
Our Take: Having directed such praise-worthy films such as Silver Linings Playbook, Three Kings, The Fighter, and the underrated I Heart Huckabees, David O. Russell is more than a reliable director. And with such an attractively impressive cast, added with a highly positive response from critics, this is a movie that will surely be on our sights.
Geography Club is a coming-of-age comedy-drama and is a film adaptation of the gay teen fiction novel of the same name, about a group of high school students who feel like outsiders because of their sexual orientations; the narrator, Russel Middlebrook, then finds himself helping to form an after school club for the students, so that they can hang out together without anyone suspecting their secrets. The film stars Cameron Deane Stewart, Justin Deeley, Meaghan Martin, Nikki Blonsky, Ana Gasteyer, and Scott Bakula, and was directed by Gary Entin.
Our Take: This movie is a refreshing alternative to standard teen comedy-dramas, in the sense that it delves into the topic of homosexuality and self-realization. It's a movie that many homosexuals, especially the young ones will appreciate.
Haunter is a Canadian supernatural thriller film, directed by Vincenzo Natali, starring Abigail Breslin. The story centers on Lisa Johnson, who is one day shy of her sixteenth birthday. And she will be forever. She and her family are dead and doomed to repeat that fateful last day before they were all killed in 1985. Only Lisa has "woken up" and realizes what is going on. She starts to feel as if she is being haunted, but the "ghost" turns out to be Olivia, a very much alive girl who lives in the house in the present day with her own family. With her help, Lisa discovers that the house once belonged to a serial killer who kidnapped teenage girls and burned their remains in a hidden furnace room. When he died, he became a Haunter - a powerful, evil spirit able to possess the living. The film premiered at the 2013 South by Southwest Film Festival, and was picked up for U.S. distribution there by IFC Midnight. It has not yet been released in the US.
Our Take: This movie is well in our sights as well, not only because Abigail Breslin is an impressive young actress, but also because director Vincenzo Natali is such a gifted director that has caught our attention when he made the highly-underrated Cronenberg-esque "Splice". This promises to be such a treat for horror fans.
Ano ang Kulay ng Nakalimutang Pangarap is directed by Jose Javier Reyes and stars Rustica Carpio, Ryan Agoncillo, Jackie Lou Blanco, Bobby Andrews, and Chynna Ortaleza. Concerned with themes of loyalty, old age, mortality and memories, the film traces the life of Teresa, a nanny who has dedicated sixty years of service to a middle class family at the expense of her own happiness and fulfillment. Though upon the death of the family patriarch, Teresa's fate is now up in the air as the family decides what sort of future is to come.
Our Take: Jose Javier Reyes is one of those directors who, when given the opportunity to work free from the control of big mainstream production entities, is capable of creating great dramatic features. "Ano ang Kulay..." looks to be the kind of feature that will definitely be that kind of emotional masterpiece. This is definitely something worth the gamble.
The Lego Movie (stylized as The LEGO Movie) is a computer-animated adventure comedy film directed and co-written by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, and starring the voices of Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Charlie Day, Liam Neeson, and Morgan Freeman. The film is based on the Lego line of construction toys.
My Take: This may simply be a kid's movie, but how I see it is that it's just some arguably brilliant but actually really blatant advertising scheme for Lego. It's not something that could interest me (mainly because it's just some big flashy advertisement), but if I was either a kid, or a parent who is willing to buy toys like Lego for my kid, then this could be a movie that may be enjoyable.
All Is Lost is a 2013 survival film written and directed by J. C. Chandor. The film stars Robert Redford as a man lost at sea. Redford is the only cast member, and the film has almost no dialogue. All Is Lost is Chandor's second feature film, following his 2011 debut Margin Call. It screened out of competition at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
Our Take: All Is Lost has received critical acclaim. And I am pretty sure that this will definitely be a movie worth seeing by serious cinema-goers.
