Magic: The Gathering to be turned into a Movie

Video Games became movies, Amusement Park rides became movies (The Pirates of the Carribean), even Toys became movies (Transformers, GI Joe). Now, the card game MAGIC: THE GATHERING is also about to be turned into a movie. Fox has worked out a deal with Hasbro to adapt the popular game, tapping Simon Kinberg to produce and develop the property into a movie franchise. [hit the jump to continue]

Magic: The Gathering (MTG; also known as Magic) is one of the most popular trading card game that has since become a phenomenon. The original concept of the game drew heavily from the motifs of traditional fantasy such as that of Dungeons & Dragons and Lord of the Rings.

Each Magic game represents a battle between mighty wizards, known as "planeswalkers", who employ spells, artifacts, and creatures depicted on individual Magic cards to defeat their opponents. The game originated around the 90's and spread throughout the Philippines and even hit Iloilo City, which up till now still has its Magic: The Gathering community.

Fox-based writer-producer who is also helping shepherd the X-Men and Fantastic Four universes at the studio, to produce the adaptation. Kinberg will also act as the franchise's head consultant (same way Chris Nolan was assigned to be the consultant for DC's other superhero movies). Kinberg will be overseeing the development of the movie series in concert with Hasbro execs.

While fantasy geeks out there are awaiting the arrival of the Warcraft movie, at least here comes something new to expect. A production start date and a target release date has not yet been hinted, so this is still something distant to look forward to.
