My Metro Manila Filmfest Forecast

The Metro Manila Film Festival is not exactly a film festival to gauge the finest in Philippine Cinema. And many of you know that I have often expressed my disgust over it. But I do acknowledge the fact that this festival allows the local studios to showcase their films without the interfering competition with Hollywood films for a week or so.

The MMFF may not exactly be a source for great movies. But now and then there are indeed gems worth seeing. Many of them, you can already crap just by seeing the trailer. But others may look like they just have lousy marketing trailers that defy the filmmaker's intention.

I believe that sometimes we do need a gauge or a forecast to tell which movies do deserve some level of trust. I made my own forecast of films for this coming MMFF, in order to share it with others who may appreciate it as well... [hit the jump to continue]

Kaleidoscope World
This movie inspired by the music of Francis Magalona is probably the best of the bunch. I may not be a big fan of modern musicals or dance movies, some may even have the impression that I despise them (which is not far from the truth). But I do acknowledge that musicals and dancing is one thing Pinoys are pretty good at. And with the melding of musicals, dance, and a movie that centers upon the youth, it could mean that this could be one hip must-see movie.

Kaleidoscope World looks refreshing, vibrant, and hippity-hoppity fun.

Overall Forecast: Bright to Mellow

Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir
It centers on a beautiful story, it features wondrous exotic locations. But it's got lousy set designs and costumes that make the movie look like some college film project. This film is pretty much a tie on its good side and bad side. Perhaps the only way to draw a conclusion is to go watch it.

Overall Forecast: Mellow to Meh

My Little Bossings
The Vic Sotto formula of what his so-called blockbuster comedies is so overused. But I could not deny that Vic can still cook up some nice pang-masa comedy with tiny slices of family drama. The only difference this time is his new 'alas' child-superstar Ryzza Mae Dizon, who is such a hell of a breakthrough young actress and a standout little comedienne to march down the red carpet of Philippine showbiz. Sure, it could possibly be crap; but at least I could possibly enjoy this one than the rest.

Overall Forecast: Meh to Okay Lang

Pagpag: Siyam na Buhay
This year, there's no "Shake Rattle & Roll" movie, instead there's a full-length, single story horror movie; Pagpag. Could this mean that Regal has come up with a horror movie concept that they could have full-length confidence on? The way I see it, the thing that's tremendously wrong with this movie is the uber-stereotype trailer and Daniel Padilla, who is such a lousy wooden actor if you ask me. Everything else about it seems typical with a benefit-of-the-doubt possibility of being passable at least. I do not expect it to be great movie; but at least it does not look silly and lame enough to give it a "stupid" stamp of disgust.

Overall Forecast: Waste of Time to Okay Lang

10,000 Hours
Among the list of awful movies, this one seems to be the less awful one. I cannot easily argue with the fact that the movie's storyline wants to tell a story that is intriguing and socially-relevant. I would strongly agree that the Political thriller is a genre that serious Filipino filmmakers should explore. The only problem is that the film looks so poorly executed. I get turned off with the fact that Joyce Bernal directed this because her forte is usually comedy, which I dont even think she's always good at. But I am, on the other hand, hoping that my forecast would be wrong. In addition, despite his impressive work in other movies, Robin Padilla sometimes has those lapses wherein his acting looks too self-conscious.

Overall Forecast: Okay Lang to Waste of Time

Kimmy Dora ang Kiyemeng Prequel
I admit the first  Kimmy Dora was indeed fun. But that's just the problem with the Tagalog mainstream movie sequels, they tend to blow up into over-commercial, obnoxious sequels. I can admit that it's fun seeing Eugene Domingo go crazy in her dual role. But a good comedy requires so much more than just one character's acting. The only silver lining here is that its and creator writer Chris Martinez is the director this time, replacing Joyce Bernal (who directed the first two movies) who is pretty much one of those corny directors, but gets to slip in an applausable work on some very few times.

Overall Forecast: Okay Lang to Waste of Time

Boy Golden: The Arturo Porcuna Story

looks like it's the worst of the bunch. At first, it would only seem to be merely the ridiculous acting, or the way how silly the lead character looks in this movie. But ER Ejercito (who, in my day he was known as George Estregan Jr.) has actually been trying to revive the Pinoy Action genre back into life and the limelight. Unfortunately, he's reviving each and every factor that killed it in the first place. What Ejercito has been doing here is no different from what Bong Revilla does: Self-promotion. The use of movies for self-promotion are a new tactic in politics, you see.

So let's even just ignore the self-promotion BS. Ever since Ejercito has joined the MMFF bandwagon, his movies are filthy-awful. They may look over-hyped and over-budgeted, but definitely poorly-crafted.

Overall Forecast: Daw Masuka Ko to Tama Ka Hinangag Nga Nasadyahan Ka Na Lang

Girl Boy Bakla Tomboy
This is the lowest and most ugliest movie on my forecast. I dont even know why Vice Ganda is playing 4 separate roles when he is really a poor poor actor. And the jokes are not even funny. Its director Wenn Deramas is a veteran at being the go-to director for being corny in the way that only the ignorant and the poor-minded can appreciate. But, yes, I know many of you will be watching this because its over-repetitious trailer marketing has probably succeeded in fooling you into thinking this is a fun movie.

Overall Forecast: Daw Masuka Ko to Nag Suka Gid Ako
