HERCULES with Dwayne Johnson and Brett Ratner moving forward

From Dwayne Johnson's Twitter, he teased his look for HERCULES
MGM and Paramount Pictures are moving ahead with their HERCULES movie that will star Dwayne Johnson as the titular character and will be directed by Brett Ratner. This movie will be bBased on the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars, the ensemble-action film is a revisionist take on the classic myth set in a grounded world where the supernatural does not exist. The screenplay is by Ryan Condal and Evan Spiliotopoulos. This movie will probably be a movie that will exclude all the supernatural, fantastical elements usually expected of what a Hercules movie would be. The pic also stars Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, Joseph Fiennes, Peter Mullan, John Hurt, Rebecca Ferguson, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Askel Hennie, and Reece Ritchie.  Hercules opens on July 25, 2014. Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. The story of this movie begins after the labors, and after the legend…

Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary.  Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies.  But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail… he must again become the hero he once was… he must embrace his own myth… he must be Hercules.

MGM Pictures and Paramount Pictures has actually begun working on this movie with the filming taking place in Budapest, Hungary. This film is produced by Beau Flynn (“JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND,” “HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS”), Barry Levine (“OBLIVION”) and Ratner. Executive producers are Peter Berg (“BATTLESHIP”), Sarah Aubrey (“BATTLESHIP”), Ross Fanger (“IRON MAN”) and Jesse Berger (“OBLIVION”).

This project sounds like it has a serious storyline. Something I am not confident Brett Ratner is likely to be good at. His work on the Rush Hour franchise shows that he is good at campy movies, but his work on Red Dragon and X-Men: The Last Stand indicated his weakness in more serious toned movies. Dwayne Johnson might be the film's strongest generator for box office success. But not so much in his more serious movies ("Snitch" and "Faster"). Let's see if this project will change Ratner's reputation, or Johnson's. What do you think of this project? Hit the comments section!
