Co-Writer of Iron Man 3 Drew Pearce hired for a Mission: Impossible
Drew Pearce co-wrote, with writer-director Shane Black, Iron Man 3. It's probably the success of this Marvel movie which made Paramount hire Pearce as writer for the new Mission: Impossible movie.
It was recently reported that franchise star Tom Cruise is officially attached to produce and star in Mission: Impossible 5 [read story here]. Production on the film is is expected to start in the fall after Cruise wraps filming on Warner Bros.’ The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Plot details are being kept quiet, and the search for a director is currently underway. Christopher McQuarrie (Jack Reacher) is reportedly in talks, but recently signed on to write and direct a remake of Ice Station Zebra. [read more after the jump]
Personally, I would not credit the success of Iron Man 3 solely on Pearce. Who knows? It might be a larger chunk of Shane Black's writing that made the movie great. Pearce may be a good writer, but a good Mission: Impossible script may likewise be a "mission: impossible" itself.
On an optimistic note, Pearce's credits look good. In 2010, Pearce made the move to the American film scene when Marvel hired him to adapt Runaways for the big screen based on the comic book by Brian K.Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. The movie remains in development. Staying in the Marvel family, it was then announced on March 31, 2011, that he would co-write Iron Man 3 with director Shane Black. The Hollywood Reporter released in July 2011 that Pearce would also pen Paramount’s adaption of the DC comics title The Mighty.
He was commissioned to write the script for a third film in the Sherlock Holmes film series starring Robert Downey, Jr. in October 2011. This project is still in development hell. Shortly after finishing Iron Man 3, Pearce completed an uncredited rewrite on Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming sci-fi action thriller Pacific Rim.
