Live-Action GAIKING Movie Being Developed

With the upcoming Pacific Rim, it seems that the Mecha/Super robot genre is alive! GAIKING, which was one of the most popular mecha robot heroes of the 1970s (along with Voltes V, Mazinger Z, and Daimos) will be made into a movie. And it will have Hollywood backing, with Valhalla Entertainment developing the project alongside Toei and Nippon. [full article and the teaser trailer after the jump]

Two years after the release of the teaser trailer, it has been announced that Valhalla Entertainment, along with Toei Animation and All Nippon Entertainment Works (ANEW), will be developing the live-action film adaptation of the classic super robot anime Gaiking.[check out the teaser trailer below]

Gale Anne Hurd, head of Valhalla Entertainment, previously produced The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Aliens, Armageddon, and The Incredible Hulk, whereas the company's recent project includes The Walking Dead television series for AMC.

Gaiking follows a young man who is recruited to serve as the lead pilot for the Super Robot Gaiking. When Earth is threatened by an alien race intent on taking over the planet, he emerges as the only one who can pilot the massive robot. Together with his fellow co-pilots he must fight off the alien force in order to save mankind.

Toei Animation's Yoshi Ikezawa and Joseph Chou (Appleseed), along with Valhalla Ent.'s Hurd will be the lead producers of the new Gaiking development project. ANEW's Sandy Climan, Tim Kwok, and Kozo Morishita of Toei Animation will be the executive producers, and Valhalla's Director of Development Kris Henigman will oversee the project with ANEW's Vice President of Creative Affairs Annmarie Bailey.

No word yet on the expected release date.

Now, I wonder, when will we get to see a live-action VOLTES V movie...???!!!
