Thomas Jane is The Punisher once again in a short film; Ron Perlman also makes an appearance

The Punisher does Dirty Laundry
by Reymundo Salao

At the recent San Diego Comic Con, at one of the minor stalls for an Independent Film Outfit, Thomas Jane showed audiences a short film entitled "Dirty Laundry". And in this bloody action short film, it featured the Marvel character Punisher, which was once again brought to life by Thomas Jane. Ron Perlman also appears in a minor role in this one. This wouldve been absolutely kick-ass news; The only problem was that this was not a Marvel-sanctioned film; this was merely a fan film written by Chad St.John and directed by Phil Joanou (Entropy), who said that everyone who worked on it donated their time and he called in a lot of favors.

If we count the general population of people who call themselves critics, I am one of a few people who stand my ground in my love for the 2004 Marvel film adaptation of The Punisher directed by Jonathan Hensleigh and starred Thomas Jane as the title character. It was a controversial movie because the funding for it was basically cut down to a minimum by the producers and director Jonathan Hensleigh had to employ clever practical tactics (renting a bar to appear as a bank) to work its way around the movie. The only problem was the script, which although not too bad, it did however made alterations to the storyline of the Punisher. In general, I think it did embody the essence of what a Punisher movie should be like. And to top it off, the film's star Thomas Jane seemed like a perfect embodiment of Frank Castle; The Punisher.

What's most endearing about Thomas Jane is that he is such a true blue geek, who tragically has failed at being in superhero & sci-fi movies that did not take off. The Punisher movie he did was not able to get the ardent following it hoped for to make a franchise out of, the sci-fi Mutant Chronicles he appeared in was a B-movie failure, and he tried so hard to campaign to star in the Jonah Hex movie, but lost it to Josh Brolin (which was actually a good thing for him because that turned out to be a bad movie). Anyway, the powers-that-be should have already learned their lessons from the previous movies; if there would be a new Punisher movie made by Marvel, it should be better this time. And I sure do hope Thomas Jane regains the role. I'm not just saying this because of his geek cred; he really does deserve the role.
