Oscar Isaac set as titular villain in "X-Men Apocalypse"

The actor to play the villain for the next X-Men movie has now been chosen. Oscar Isaac, who is best known for his role in "Inside Llewyn Davis" will be playing the titular villain for the upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse". Apocalypse is one of the biggest villains in the X-Men comics universe. His real name is En Sabah Nur, and he is one of the oldest mutants who was considered a god during the time of ancient Egypt. Oscar Isaac has been highly regarded as one of the most incredibly talented actors working in Hollywood now, and one of those new names which has been boosting their potential in smaller character-driven films, and are poised to explode in bigger pictures. While we will be seeing more of him in upcoming character-driven dramas like "A Most Violent Year", we can also expect him to grace bigger films like the  sci-fi film "Ex Machina" and a supporting role in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". With this in mind, it's safe to say that the role is, extremely, in good hands. The character does call for somebody with a bombastic acting ability. With modern special effects, the physicality of the character Apocalypse, who is enormous and god-like in his muscle-bound stature, can easily be replicated onscreen. But acting is the X-factor that will ultimately matter more.

Various sources had previously reported that Fox was eyeing Tom Hardy to play the villain in X-Men: Apocalypse, so it was clear that the studio was aiming high in the casting of this role. These sources had pointed out that while other actors were considered, Isaac was an early favorite and served as the prototype for the kind of actor director Bryan Singer was looking for.

Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Nicholas Hoult and Hugh Jackman are all expected to return for "X-Men: Apocalypse" Bryan Singer and writer/producer Simon Kinberg are looking to introduce more young versions of the most famous mutants, as a recent report ran down a casting shortlist for the roles of young Jean Grey and Cyclops that included Chloe Grace Moretz.

Filming on X-Men: Apocalypse is due to begin in Spring 2015 in anticipation of a May 27, 2016 release date.

WHO IS APOCALYPSE? If you stuck around for the post-credits scene of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" then you already got a glimpse of the character Apocalypse (obviously played by a younger actor, playing a younger Apocalypse). Looking back, the scene shows a robed and hooded person standing on a desert sand dune, being worshiped by a large assembly of people chanting "En Sabah Nur," while, in the distance, a gigantic pyramid is being assembled in massive pieces by Psychokinesis. The camera circles to reveal the figure of a young man with grey skin and blue lips, while four horsed figures sit motionless in the background.

Apocalypse was born 5000 years ago in Akkaba. He is born with the mutant X-gene, possibly the first living being on Earth to possess the gene, and a side-effect of this gives him gray skin and blue lips. Because of this, his people abandon him as an infant. He is rescued by Baal of the Sandstormers who sees the child's potential power and will to survive. Baal names him En Sabah Nur or "The First One." The Sandstormers live by the credo of survival of the fittest, believing that only those who are strong enough to survive hardship and direct conflict are worthy of life.

Apocalypse travels around the world, convincing civilizations that he is a god (inspiring different myths as a result) and manipulating them into fighting wars. He justifies that this encourages "growth, judgment, and destruction." After the various battles that sought to kill him, he falls into hibernation.

After waking up from centuries of hibernation, Apocalypse has continued his reign of terror. He fought the team X-Factor (which was then comprised of the original members of the X-Men) and had corrupted Angel, replaced his wings with wings of blade, and had transformed him into his weapon; into one of his Four Horsemen. When Angel woke up and regains his identity, he renames himself Archangel and fought Apocalypse with a vengeful bloodlust.

One of the best Apocalypse storylines in the X-Men universe, and one of the biggest events in the Marvel Universe is the "Age of Apocalypse" storyline which tells an entire run of the X-Men titles set in an alternate world where Apocalypse conquers all of North America and eventually mutants are considered the ruling class. Apocalypse also initiated a genocidal campaign called "cullings" killing millions of humans. To further ensure that no one was left to challenge him or undo the circumstances that led to his reign, he had everyone with telepathic or chronal abilities hunted down.
