World Premieres Filmfest at the Cinematheque this Week

In connection with the First World Premieres Film Festival by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the Iloilo Cinematheque will also be screening world festival films this week [hit the jump to continue]

Intangible Blue (Azul intangible)
is a road movie documentary over and about the ocean, which portrays the diversity and charm of Mexico's northwestern seas. The journey starts in Mexico City and plays out in the waters and depths of the Gulf of California and the Pacific. A film crew sails several weeks on a ship, The Sandman, taking on an expedition to get to know the life in these waters.

What Do Goats Dream?
Film about goatkeepers and the nomadic life of shepherds in Oaxaca, who live up in the mountains with their goats in a solitary and dedicated life, until the time comes to deliver their herd to the Hacienda where the matanza takes. A tradition that goes back in the region for over 400 years. All family members get involved in the Matanza and the goat meat preparation. The film is a reflection about life and death at the Mixteca. The traditions and music of the region are present through the Pasatono Orchestra, the Lila Downs´ singing voice and a peasant who wonders: What do goats dream?

The Convict Patient
is a documentary directed by Alejandro Solar. On February 1970, Carlos CastaƱeda de la Fuente tried to assassinate the Mexican President to avenge the Tlatelolco massacre from October 2nd 1968, defying the most repressive regime in the contemporary Mexican history. Forty years later, this failed avenger survived the system´s disproportionate retaliation, only to wander Mexico City´s streets as a vagrant.

The Mayor
In northern Mexico, the murder of municipal mayors is a common practice in the fight between drug cartels to control territories. Mauricio Fernandez is a controversial Mayor who presents himself as one who takes justice in his own hands in order to keep the peace in one of the wealthiest counties in Latin America. “The Mayor” analyses the complex plot woven from the exercise of power and current policies, within a period plagued by violence, strong economic interests, and the overwhelming discredit of the political class.

Recipes for Disaster
This is a documentary that broaches the subject of environmental issues and conservation. Taking his own family, Webster convinces his wife and two small children that the family should go on an oil diet. They continue to live their average suburban lives but without using any fossil fuels, without driving cars or flying in airplanes, or buying anything packaged in plastic. In this journey they are confronted by the depth of their oil addiction, and they face acute withdrawal symptoms.

Sarafina!
This drama-musical movie centers on students involved in the Soweto Riots, in opposition to the implementation of Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools. The character Sarafina (Leleti Khumalo) feels shame at her mother's (Miriam Makeba) acceptance of her role as domestic servant in a white household in apartheid South Africa, and inspires her peers to rise up in protest, especially after her inspirational teacher, Mary Masombuka (Whoopi Goldberg) is imprisoned.
