Upcoming Movies: Guardians of the Galaxy

One of the most highly-anticipated movies of 2014 is Guardians of the Galaxy. Not only does this movie promise to be a highly spectacular epic space adventure, but it's also part of the Marvel universe. [hit the jump to continue]

Guardians of the Galaxy is a space epic adventure that focuses its story on a band of intergalactic misfits. In the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. In order to evade Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a group of misfits including Gamora, Rocket, Drax the Destroyer, and Groot. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

The comics series of the same name from which it is based on, and the upcoming movie seems to have a treatment quite similar to Firefly and Serenity, in so much as its characters are a band of thrill-seeking outlaws who go in heroic crusades. Its tone will be high adventure with light-hearted elements of comedy.

MARVEL'S GALACTIC UNIVERSE
Guardians of the Galaxy actually belongs to the Marvel universe and is part of Marvel's Phase 2, which leads in to Avengers 2. For now, we do not know yet how it will directly connect to Avengers 2. What we do know is that it sets up the galactic aspect of the Marvel universe from which the villain Thanos belongs in. Thanos is the villain teased at the last part of the first Avengers movie, and is presumed to be the main villain in the third Avengers movie.

In addition, we saw in the post-credits scene of Thor 2 how Sif and Volstagg deliver an infinity gem to The Collector for safekeeping. The Collector is a character that also belongs in Marvel's galactic universe and will have a bigger role in The Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

CAST & CREW
The film is directed by James Gunn, who wrote the screenplay with Nicole Perlman. James Gunn is best known for underrated but sharply-made films such as the 2006 sci-fi horror comedy "Slither" and the 2010 dark comedy superhero drama entitled "Super".  The Avengers director Joss Whedon, who signed a deal to creatively consult on all of the films leading up to The Avengers sequel, was enthusiastic about the selection of Gunn to direct, saying "James [Gunn] is what makes me think it will work... He is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart. He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon... He has a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love for the material. It's going to be hard for [the human characters] to keep up."

Guardians of the Galaxy boasts an impressive cast line-up that include Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as the green-skinned, ass-kicking Gamora, Dave "Batista"Bautista (yes, the wrestler) as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel will be providing the voice for the gun-toting tree creature named Groot, Bradley Cooper is the voice of the trigger-happy Rocket Raccoon, Lee Pace as Ronan, Michael Rooker (Merle Dixon from The Walking Dead) as Yondu, Karen Gillan (from Doctor Who) as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou (that big black dude from Amistad) as Korath, John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey, Glenn Close as Nova Prime, Benicio del Toro as The Collector, and Josh Brolin is the voice of Thanos.

Guardians of the Galaxy premiered in Singapore on July 12, 2014. It is scheduled to be released in Philippine theaters on July 30, 2014. August 1, 2014 in the United States.
