Syowing this Week [June 25, 2014 to July 1, 2014]

Well, the new Transformers movies seems to be the only new movie that opens in cinemas this week, with the exception of the Cinematheque screenings. At least 22 Jump Street is still showing in one theater. Our opinion? go for the Cinematheque's Chinese Filmfest instead. Or check out 22 Jump Street. Well, you kids are gonna go check out that robot flick anyway...

Transformers: Age of Extinction
is the fourth installment of the live-action Transformers film series directed by Michael Bay and stars Mark Wahlberg in the lead role. This sequel to Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the film takes place four years after the invasion of Chicago. The screenplay is written by Ehren Kruger, who served as screenwriter since Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

22 Jump Street
This action-comedy movie is the sequel of the 2012 comedy "21 Jump Street" which was an adaptation of the late 80's TV show of the same title. This movie follows the story of 2 young cops who went undercover in a high school to bust campus-based drug syndicates, in this sequel, the two cops are sent to college. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.

This week, the Film Development Council of the Philippines in cooperation with The Cultural Office of the Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China, brings us the 2014 Chinese Film Festival. This year's films feature some interesting films, some of them are martial arts packed with Donnie Yen, yes, the star of Ip Man himself. We also get to see an epic action comedy produced by and stars Jackie Chan, and a drama movie which has Jet Li in the lead; an all-drama Jet Li movie, I bet youre curious now. Especially that admission for this festival is Free. Check it out this week at the FDCP Cinematheque, Solis Street, Iloilo City.

Little Big Soldier
his action comedy film directed by Ding Sheng and produced and written by Jackie Chan, also starring Chan and Leehom Wang. The story takes place during the Warring States period of China, and tells the story of three men and a horse. An old foot soldier (Chan) and a young high-ranking general from a rival state (Wang) become the only survivors of a ruthless battle. The soldier decides to kidnap the general and brings him back to his own state in hopes for a reward in return.

Ocean Heaven
This drama film stars martial arts superstar Jet Li in his first full drama role (yes, folks, no animal or human was harmed in any way by Jet Li during the duration of this film). It also co-stars Taiwanese actress Gwei Lun-mei, who previously starred in Jay Chou's Secret.

Spring Subway
This romance film directed by Zhang Yibai, stars Xu Jinglei and Geng Le. The film represents a relatively new genre in China, the artistic "commercial film" with its international urban sensibilities designed to appeal to young middle class Chinese. Spring Subway is a stylistic film that plays with chronological conventions and flashbacks, and with characters that often break the fourth wall to directly address the audience.

Buddha Mountain
 - is a drama film directed by Li Yu and starring Fan Bingbing, Sylvia Chang, Bolin Chen, Fei Long. This film chronicles the lives of three youths who have no intention of sitting exams and getting into universities and a retired Chinese opera singer who is mourning the death of her son. The film explores themes of teenage confusion, angst, and rebellion and the impermanence of life.

Detective Dee
Its full title is: Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame. This action mystery film directed and produced by Tsui Hark, and features art direction and fight choreography by Sammo Hung, and starring Andy Lau, Carina Lau, Li Bingbing, Deng Chao and Tony Leung Ka-fai. The film tells the story of the fictional account of Di Renjie, one of the most celebrated officials of the Tang Dynasty.

Bodyguards and Assassins
This historical action-drama is directed by Teddy Chan and stars Fan Bingbing, Zhang Hanyu, Nicholas Tse, Wang Xueqi, and martial arts superstar Donnie Yen (Ip Man). In 1905, revolutionist Sun Yat-Sen visits Hong Kong to discuss plans with Tongmenghui members to overthrow the Qing dynasty. But when they find out that assassins have been sent to kill him, they assemble a group of protectors to prevent any attacks.
