Will We Ever See a "Goonies" Sequel?

The Goonies, is not merely iconic in the 80's, but stands as one of the most prominent kid's adventure movie. For years ever since its release in 1985, there had been several confirmations and denials that have both surrounded the possibility of a sequel. A few years ago, The Goonies director Richard Donner said a sequel was unlikely to come together, but held out hope for a Broadway musical.  Fun as a Goonies musical may have been, that didn’t pan out.  However, Donner has changed his tune on a sequel.  Donner, the director behind Superman and Superman II, was asked if would ever make another comic book movie.  His surprising response: “If you call Goonies a comic book.  We’re doing a sequel.” He added that “hopefully all” of the stars will return.

I doubt it’s a done deal yet, but if you belong to the Goonies generation, this is promising news from a key player. [hit the jump to continue to what Donner said around the 25th anniversary Goonies DVD/Blu-ray release about the chances of a sequel, remake, or musical]

We were thinking that [the sequel] for years back, couldn’t do it.  Felt like everything we were doing would hurt what we had with the original, hence the musical.  But Steven [Spielberg] said something the other day to me that he and Chris [Columbus] were talking about and maybe something—but I don’t think there’d be a sequel.  I wouldn’t remake it.  If anything it’d be something new and fresh.  Hopefully we’re doing this as a musical on Broadway.  It took forever to get on Broadway.  It was a long, long process but it just got a lot shorter because there’s a great writer/producer [Tim Long] who does musicals on The Simpsons which are classic.  He just delivered a treatment on Goonies as a musical and it’s friggin’ great.

OUR OPINIONS...
It would be very interesting to get to see a Goonies sequel. And with the actors and actresses now old enough to be grandfathers and grandmothers, they could drive it in a more comedic adventure approach. Also, they could take a slightly similar approach to the Stephen King movie "It" (minus the horror element, of course) wherein its adult characters used to share this great adventure when they were kids and reunite once more to share a new one. In addition, a new Goonies movie could be utilized to introduce audiences to the original movie.
