You see, "Army of Darkness" had two versions of the ending. Because the studio wanted to end the film on a high note for the character of Ash, the happy (the S-Mart) ending was used for the American release. But the original ending preferred by Raimi and Bruce Campbell themselves is where Ash oversleeps in the cave and wakes up in a post-apocalyptic future. This was the version we saw used in Philippine theaters. This ending was restored to the film for the UK VHS release, which also had the S-Mart ending put in as a post-credit extra. This scene has been restored on the Army of Darkness: Director's Cut Region 3 DVD released by MGM, the "director's cut bootleg edition" DVD and the double-disc DVD, which also featured the S-Mart ending of the film. Raimi believed Ash to be more of a fool, which is why he liked to torture him so much in his films; Ash being a goof and drinking too much potion was in his character.
Earlier this month, Bruce Campbell had confirmed in various sources that there’d be a sequel to “Army of Darkness” which, itself, was the second sequel to original “Evil Dead”- it has now been confirmed that Sam Raimi will direct the picture himself. Raimi and Campbell helped produce last year’s remake, and it was unclear if that meant that the franchise was starting from scratch with them in behind-the-scenes roles or if they’d somehow find a way to continue the original storyline while building on the new one. The remake’s director, Fede Alvarez, has now confirmed that.
