Charlie Hunnam drops out of Fifty Shades of Grey

This is news that fangirls (and fanboys) of the novel would rejoice over. The filmmakers of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey. [hit the jump to continue]

Last month, we reported that the producers of the film adaptation of the novel has chosen Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam as the lead characters of Fifty Shades of Grey. Although I personally think that Hunnam is not so much of a bad actor, the idea of having him play the lead male role in the movie was met with a lot of whiny angry reactions. Could the pressure have gotten to Hunnam? Fifty Shades of Grey is not exactly the kind of book (and movie) that relies on story and actor quality, they will not care if Hunnam will win them over just by his acting prowess. It's the kind of movie that could strongly rely on its fangirls (and fanboys) rallying for it. And if they want Hunnam out, Hunnam is out.

Production was slated to begin later this month for an August 1, 2014 release, so Universal will announce a replacement soon or push back production.  Dakota Johnson is still on board to play Anastasia Steele alongside co-star Jennifer Ehle.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” follows the relationship of 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele.  Subsequent novels in the series, “Fifty Shades Darker” (September 2011) and “Fifty Shades Freed” (January 2012) explore the couple’s deepening relationship.
