Syowing this Week

It looks like another week of great movies with two big genre flicks opening this week, an intelligent  sci-fi action movie, an action remake, a ghost horror movie based on real events, and a biopic of popular 70's pornstar.[hit the jump to continue]

ELYSIUM
which was originally set for an August 9 Philippine release until it was cancelled and moved, officially opens this week in local theaters. ELYSIUM is directed by Neill Blomkamp who made his breakthrough with the movie District 9. ELYSIUM is a futuristic sci-fi set in a dystopian future wherein two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet. ELYSIUM stars Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, and Jodie Foster.

GETAWAY is an action-thriller which is directed by Courtney Solomon and stars Ethan Hawke, Selena Gomez and Jon Voight. Though originally reported to be a remake of the 1972 film The Getaway, the film is actually an original story. This movie has had the misfortune of being universally panned by critics with a mere 2% on the rottentomatoes website.

THE DIPLOMAT HOTEL is something that you might wanna check out if you haven’t got enough of that ghost horror fever that The Conjuring may have given you in previous weeks. Based on the hauntings of the Diplomat Hotel in Baguio city, the story centers upon the character of Victoria Lansang, who was formerly a popular news reporter whose traumatic experience ruined her career. And now, the only assignment she can get is to do a documentary on the last night of The Diplomat Hotel in Baguio City, a crumbling and abandoned building infamously known for its bloody past and its hauntings. Looking for redemption, she arrives there with her crew and they start filming. But as they get deeper into the night, the place starts to exert its will on them and they find out exactly what monstrous evil awaits at The Diplomat Hotel.  By daybreak, their lives will never be the same again. The Diplomat Hotel is written & directed by Christopher Ad. Castillo, and stars Gretchen Barretto, Mon Confiado, and Joel Torre.

Also showing this week is LOVELACE which is a biopic about the famous pornstar in the 1970s Linda Lovelace who did such porn movies such as Deep Throat. Lovelace is played by hot actress Amanda Seyfried, but before you boys start running out to the theaters for this movie, let me remind you that this is merely an R-16 movie. Then there’s also the dance movie STREETDANCE ALL STARS and the sci fi THE COLONY showing this week.

ON THE JOB is on extended run at Robinsons Movieworld. This highly recommended film by Erik Matti has received much acclaim at the Cannes International Film Festival. If you have not seen this movie, I urge you to do so. The ONE DIRECTION movie is also on extended run, along with FROZEN GROUND, and THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES, which I really honestly don’t know why they’re extending this garbage.
