The Wolverine Redefined

One of the highly-anticipated movies this year is THE WOLVERINE starring Hugh Jackman, reprising his role as the savage mutant, directed by James Mangold, screenplay written by Christopher McQuarrie, Scott Frank, and Mark Bomback, and based on the 1982 limited series Wolverine by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.

One of the reasons why this is highly anticipated is the fact that this movie seeks to revitalize the character with a treatment designed to correct the wrongs of the previous movie, one that will render it "done right this time" [full article after the jump]

Wolverine is one of the most popular characters in the comics universe, as near as popular as Batman, Superman, and Spider-man. But he is actually acknowledged to be THE anti-hero among the line-up of popular comics characters. He is acknowledged to be the baddest of the good guys, and the one who always breaks the rules in an arguably anarchic manner.

Humiliation and Redemption
Bryan Singer's X-Men movies brought Wolverine into the wider range of popularity in the mainstream. But that portrayal was not entirely spot-on, and when the movie "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" proved to become one of the worst superhero movies ever made, Wolverine's popularity became laughable.

There was a demand for a better Wolverine movie. The producers had finally acknowledged that they had to give this franchise a fresh new start.

This new movie, simply titled THE WOLVERINE is designed intentionally to fix and rehabilitate the damage done by the previous movie, give the character a sort of a reboot treatment, and bring back Wolverine to his savage bloody roots from the comics, specifically the storyline of the famous limited series written by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont about Wolverine's tragic love story in Japan.

Synopsis
After the events of X-Men: The Last Stand, Logan travels to Japan, where he engages a figure from his past in a fight that has lasting consequences. Vulnerable for the first time, and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel, but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than ever before.

Cast & Crew
Aside from Hugh Jackman, the cast is composed mainly of Japanese actors and actresses. Hiroyuki Sanada, who is known for his role in The Last Samurai and Ringu (The Ring), is cast as Yakuza crime boss Shingen, Hal Yamanouchi (Push, Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) as Yashida, model and actress Tao Okamoto as Logan's love interest Mariko Yashida, model and actress Rila Fukushima as the assassin Yukio, and Brian Tee, best known for his role as the main villain in "The Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift" as Noburo Mori, complete the Japanese main cast. While Korean actor Will Yun Lee, whose been known for his main villain roles in the James Bond movie "Die Another Day" and the movie adaptation of the Marvel anti-hero "Elektra" plays Kenuichio Harada, better known as the Silver Samurai.

The cast also includes Russian film, stage, and television actress Svetlana Khodchenkova as the villainess Viper, and Famke Janssen reprising her role as Jean Grey from the previous (X-Men) films.

The screenplay is written by Christopher McQuarrie who is the writer and director of such films as The Way of the Gun,  and Jack Reacher, and writer of The Usual Suspects which won in the  1996 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The screenplay is also co-written by Scott Frank and Mark Bomback.

The director James Mangold is known for highly praised films such as Cop Land, Girl Interrupted, Walk the Line, and 3:10 to Yuma.

Release
The Wolverine is scheduled to be released on July 24, 2013 in various international markets; July 25, 2013 in Australia; and on July 26, 2013 in the United States. THE WOLVERINE arrives in the Philippines July 25, 2013.
