Marvel's ITEM 47 on the upcoming AVENGERS blue-ray/dvd

ITEM 47
by Reymundo Salao

Oh you thought you merely wanted to buy the upcoming AVENGERS dvd or blue-ray? Now Marvel has given another reason for you to lust over the upcoming DVD.

The upcoming Blue-Ray / DVD will contain a short film entitled ITEM 47. This is not the first time that Marvel DVDs have this. When the THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA special edition blue-ray / DVD and blue-ray were released, it also contained short films(refered to as "One Shots") featuring AGENT COULSON; in one of them we get to see Coulson in action against some robbers. While the first two Marvel one-shots, Something Funny Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer and The Consultant both ran four minutes, Item 47 will run twelve minutes, and will go on a "much bigger ride" (Oh this should be bigger, considering it has its own damn official poster) The Blue-ray/DVD will be released in the market on September 25, 2012.

Oh by the way, if you are indeed buying the AVENGERS DVD, make sure that it is a SPECIAL EDITION DVD and does contain all the bonus special features. Because the standard Philippine release of most DVDs are watered down to its bare minimum of containing just the movie (you might as well just download it if that's the case, right?) So if you are indeed buying one, make sure it HAS ALL the special features. It's gonna cost you, but it's worth it. But if you go cheap, the DVD... if there would still be stocks of it remaining... would possibly go on discount sale after maybe 3 years. But I doubt you could wait that long.

ITEM 47. The title refers to an alien gun that falls into the hands of a hard-luck couple (played by Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford) after the climactic battle in The Avengers.  Two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (Maximiliano Hernández and Titus Welliver) are tasked with getting the gun and capturing the couple, who are going on a crime-spree with their new toy.

I am really hoping that this One Shot will serve as a teaser for one of the new Avengers. I was kind of disappointed that the previous 2 One Shots did not really have much geek impact on me. After all the Marvel universe is vast and so rich with iconic characters, that's why Marvel should really start to gradually filling the media up with its characters, be it hero or villain.

My suspicion on Ant-Man comes from the fact that director Edgar Wright (who has been given the task to direct Ant-Man) has recently been making test reels for the film.

Additionally, the studio is exploring the possibility of making the shorts a test balloon for heroes that might get their own movie, e.g. Black Panther or Wasp.  However, Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito points out the risk in this approach:

“Let’s say we wanted to introduce Ant-Man [in a short], and that would mean we have to cast him prior to having a filmmaker. That’s difficult and something we wouldn’t want to do.”

If you are in the US, specifically in around the San Diego area, you may wanna check out the The 2012 San Diego Comic-Con this July 12 to 15 because Marvel will show Item 47 at a special screening there. But for those of you who cannot wait, here is a very brief glimpse...
