The controversial 8-hour epic film by Lav Diaz "Hele Sa Hiwagang Hapis" is set to have a screening at the FDCP Cinematheque Iloilo this March 26, 2015 Saturday. This sunday, June 28, 2015 (1:00 PM), the FDCP Cinematheque will bring us a one-time screening of Lav Diaz's five-hour award winning epic "Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon" this screening is part of the World Premieres Film Festival featured by the Film Development Council of the Philippines for this week. Admission is only P 100. The FDCP Cinematheque is located at the B&C Square Building, Solis Street, Iloilo City (near BPI and East West Bank). Those who have some knowledge about Philippine cinema must know who Lav Diaz is. Perhaps one may not have seen one of his movies, but surely one should have heard about him. He's that Filipino filmmaker who makes these long epic movies that have won numerous awards in international film festivals. Just last month, Lav Diaz took home the prestigious Golden Leopard for best film for “From What Is Before” (Mula sa kung ano ang noon). On the other hand of the tale, it's quite sad that even after he and his crew brought the biggest honor the country has received so far in an A-list film festival, there was no hero's welcome or parade to celebrate their victory when they arrived back. Lav Diaz's “Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon” to be screened at the BFI London Film Festival

The BFI (British Film Institute) London Film Festival will be held this October 8 to 19, 2014. And among the movie that will be shown in this festival is Lav Diaz’s “Mula sa Kung Ano ang Noon” a.k.a: "From What is Before". This five-and-a-half hour epic is set in 1972 Philippines. Mysterious things are happening in a remote barrio. Wails are heard from the forest, cows are hacked to death, a man is found bleeding to death at the crossroad and houses are burned. Ferdinand E. Lav Diaz's NORTE screened in Toronto, Paul Sta. Ana's OROS wins award in Iowa

After Cannes, Lav Diaz’s “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” goes to the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The fest’s website hails “Norte” as a “masterpiece because of its scope and rigor…layered and emotionally powerful (and at times horrifying)…astonishing and deeply mature.”

Meanwhile, off from Canada, we go to the US where Filipino filmmaker Paul Sta. Ana’s “Oros” won honorable mention for Best Narrative Feature at the recent Landlocked Film Festival, held in Iowa City. “Oros” was an entry in the 2012 Cinemalaya fest where it won Best Actor for lead star Kristoffer King. Now on its seventh year, the Landlocked fest celebrates independent movies from all over the world.

Lav Diaz & Brillante Mendoza included in the Venice Film Fest's "Venezia 70 - Future Reloaded"

The 70th anniversary of the Venice International Film Festival will be held in Italy this Aug. 28, 2013 to Sept. 7, 2013. Filipino filmmakers Brillante Mendoza (Kinatay, Serbis, Lola) and Lav Diaz (Batang West Side, Melancholia) are set to join in on the Festival's “Venezia 70 - Future Reloaded” program which features 70 Directors and their short films. Lav Diaz's short film “The Firefly” (which runs 83 seconds short) and Brillante Mendoza's short "Kamera" (which runs 90 seconds) are included in the "Venezia 70"

“Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” and “Mamay Umeng” to be shown in Czech Filmfest

Two Filipino films have made it to this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, set June 28 to July 6. Lav Diaz’s “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” will be featured in the fest’s Another View section. On the other hand, The movie “Mamay Umeng” directed by Dwein Baltazar, will be competing in the Forum of Independents section, wherein it will vie alongside 11 other “low-budget films, by young filmmakers with outstanding talent and original vision.”

“Mamay Umeng” previously won best film at the Jeonju fest in Korea. Also up for grabs is broadcasting rights with Czech TV worth  5,000 euros ($6,481).

Three Pinoy Films in the Cannes Filmfest, and a Singaporean movie entitled "Ilo Ilo"

The 66th annual Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place in Cannes, France from 15 to 26 May 2013. Two Filipino films are included in the Un Certain Regard section of the 66th Cannes Film Festival, namely; Adolf Alix Jr.'s Death March and Lav Diaz's Norte, Hangganan Ng Kasaysayan.

The Directors’ Fortnight has revealed the line-up for 45th edition running May 16-26. Among the list are the movies "On The Job" directed by Erik Matti, who hails from nearby Negros. And then there is his movie from Singapore entitled "Ilo Ilo" [READ THE FULL ARTICLE AFTER THE JUMP]

BRUTUS and BUTTERFLIES HAVE NO MEMORIES will have an Iloilo Screening

Tara Illenberger's thought-provoking and wonderful film BRUTUS will have a free screening this Friday July 27, 2012 at the University of Iloilo Phinma Quadrangle A. This is in connection with the ACTIVE VISTA Human Rights Film Festival 2012. The film's director Tara Illenberger will be present in the event as a guest speaker; as well as Mr. Hermogenes Gacho Jr. from I Stand. The screening is free admission, you don't have to pay anything to watch this magnificent motion picture.

In line with the same festival, the Lav Diaz film BUTTERFLIES HAVE NO MEMORIES will also have a screening on August 1, 2012 4 PM at the CPU Rose Memorial Auditorium. It will have a ticket price of P 80.
