NORTE, HANGGANAN NG KASAYSAYAN hits Iloilo, for One Night Only

Some people have been asking about the upcoming screening of the Lav Diaz film "Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan" which will be shown at Robinson's Movieworld Iloilo this Monday at 6:00 PM.

The story of Norte follows Fabian (Sid Lucero), a narcissistic law student from a privileged background in the Ilocos Norte region. His idealistic malcontent with an unsatisfying sex life becomes increasingly vocal about the need to put philosophical ideas into practice. In a a moment of bursting emotions, Fabian has brutally murdered venal moneylender Magda (Mae Paner) and the sole witness to the attack, Magda's spoiled but innocent teenage daughter.

Over the course of of the movie, it gradually becomes clear that the crime has actually been pinned on one of Magda's clients, Joaquin (Archie Alemania), who lives in a nearby village with his wife, Eliza (Angeli Bayani), and two young children.

Joaquin ends up serving a life sentence in a maximum security penitentiary, to the anguish of his loved ones -- Eliza contemplates on taking her own life as well as those of her traumatized offspring. Meanwhile, Fabian becomes haunted by guilt and this drives him to a deeper shade of insanity, one that leads to more violence.

“Norte” is the champion of numerous international film awards. It won the Feature Film Award at the IBAFF (Ibn Arabi Film Festival) International Film Festival in Murcia, Spain. It won Best Picture at the International Cinephile Society Awards, and a Human Rights Film Award at the Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Festival. In addition, it got nominated on the Prix Un Certain Regard for the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

This screening of “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” is organized by DAKILA ILOILO in cooperation with ROCK-ED ILOILO. DAKILA is an organization of artists, young professionals, students, and Filipino who envisions the Philippines as a nation of heroes. DAKILA was founded by such modern day icons such as the late Tado Jimenez, Lourd De Veyra, Ramon Bautista, Noel Cabangon, Buhawi Meneses, among many others. They have been responsible for various projects such as The Freedom Ride, Rak of Aegis, Tik Tok Pilipinas, and many others. Currently, DAKILA ILOILO is working to organize a talk with Lourd De Veyra on Media Arts.

“Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” is surely a movie that cinephiles and movie junkies should check out. I hope I’ll see you there.
