For an R-rated (as far as the US standards anyway) movie about a not-so-popular superhero, to gain the phenomenal box office numbers that it has right now, is certainly a feat worth talking about and discussed by those who study the motions of cinema. It was a memorable week for Iloilo City and the film arts of Western Visayas, as the second CineKasimanwa: Western Visayas Film Festival was held last December 8 t0 13, 2014. The three venues namely; the UPV Cinematheque, the FDCP Cinematheque, and SM City Iloilo Cinema, were showing films made by filmmakers of Western Visayas. From magnificent works by established Visayan artists like Lav Diaz, Peque Gallaga, Tara Illenberger, Ned Trespeces, and Jay Abello, to pioneers like Joenar Pueblo and Ray Gibraltar, the amazing features from TM Malones, Kip Oebanda and Aimee Apostol Escasa, to the works of filmmakers from Guimbal, Negros, and unforgettable short films from various artists, among them are young directors coming out with their debut masterpieces. Undoubtedly, the CineKasimanwa definitely accomplished their objective this year, of giving spotlight on marvellous films of Western Visayas and introducing them to the mainstream public. Those who have some knowledge about Philippine cinema must know who Lav Diaz is. Perhaps one may not have seen one of his movies, but surely one should have heard about him. He's that Filipino filmmaker who makes these long epic movies that have won numerous awards in international film festivals. Just last month, Lav Diaz took home the prestigious Golden Leopard for best film for “From What Is Before” (Mula sa kung ano ang noon). On the other hand of the tale, it's quite sad that even after he and his crew brought the biggest honor the country has received so far in an A-list film festival, there was no hero's welcome or parade to celebrate their victory when they arrived back. 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four has been under heavy scrutiny for casting a line-up that seems to be horribly inaccurate to what a Fantastic Four line-up should be [click here for that report], it's a casting that spells really bad news for any hopes of this being a good movie, because it indicates that its producers seem to stubbornly just stray away from the essence of the source material so that they could market to a "Twilight" tween market demographic. Fears of it being an awful movie are being reinforced with an interview with its star Michael B. Jordan (cast as Human Torch), indicating the project's instability.

THE CONJURING opened this week in Philippine cinemas, and it seems that it is garnering such hype, promising strong numbers at the box office. I watched the movie on its opening day, this Wednesday; at a theater that was packed with audiences, so much so that we did not get to sit at our usual favorite spot. I was actually impressed as to how Warner Brothers Philippines seem to have played their cards with the local release of this movie. The Conjuring opened in US theaters last week of July. And from that time, with its blitzkrieg success at the US box office, there had already been the buzz and the hype that has been created.
