Ever since 2007, Hollywood has been trying to develop the popular anime series "Robotech" into a motion picture, with Tobey Maguire attached to produce and star. Akiva Goldsman (screenwriter of "A Beautiful Mind" and "I Am Legend"), as producer, and Lawrence Kasdan ( who wrote such greats as "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark") as writer, have also been trying their hand to develop this intergalactic saga into a movie. Tommy Yune, who directed the 2006 animated movie "Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles" revealed that this movie was planned as a re-imagining of the original Robotech universe (with new updated mecha and character designs) and will take place several years in the future, departing from the original cartoon's 2009 setting. In 2008, however, one of the producers Charles Roven declared that he is no longer working on the proposed film adaptation.
There was no real motion for the project, until in 2013, the project was revived when Warner Bros was in talks with commercial director Nic Mathieu to direct the film. On July 24, 2013 it was reported that Leonardo DiCaprio had turned down a role in Star Wars Episode VII (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and has shown interest to star as a main character in the upcoming big screen version of Robotech. DiCaprio's longtime friend and co-star in The Great Gatsby, Tobey Maguire, is still set to produce — and probably participate in the film as another one of the lead actors — while Nic Mathieu will direct.
Check out the intro of the anime series back in the late 80's and it will give you an idea what Robotech is all about...
