Disney working on a Maleficent 2

Disney is developing a sequel for "Maleficent" which was a surprise box office hit for Disney in 2014, bringing in more than $758 million worldwide. [hit the jump to continue]

But although, Disney has locked on to Maleficent screenwriter Linda Woolverton who is returning to pen the sequel, they have yet to sit down with Angelina Jolie and have her officially signed on to part 2.

The first film was an inversion and a reimagining of Disney’s 1959 animated classic "Sleeping Beauty" following the villainess Maleficent, chronicling how she became the vindictive woman who cursed the princess Aurora, and painting her in a sympathetic light.

While 2010’s "Alice in Wonderland" (also scripted by Woolverton) was Disney’s first major venture into live-action reboots of their fairytale classics, it was "Maleficent" that got the re-imagining trend off the ground, bringing home more than four times its reported $180 million budget. Following the success of "Maleficent" and this year’s "Cinderella", Disney has been on a roll with just greenlighting live-action reboots for its classic fairy tale lineup, including an "Alice in Wonderland" sequel, "Beauty and the Beast", "Dumbo", "Tinkerbell", "Mulan", "Pinoccio" and even "Winnie the Pooh".
