The 87th Oscars

The 87th prestigious Academy Awards was held yesterday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, USA. And it's a grand slam for "Birdman" gaining four major awards, as it has won Best Picture, Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki, Best Director for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and Best Original Screenplay for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Nicolas Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Armando Bo. Eddie Redmayne won Best Actor for "The Theory of Everything", Julianne Moore won Best Actress for "Still Alice", J.K. Simmons won Best Supporting Actor for "Whiplash", and Patricia Arquette won Best Supporting Actress for "Boyhood". [hit the jump to continue]

To those who are curious about this film, "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)" is a black comedy-drama that follows protagonist Riggan Thomson, a faded Hollywood actor famous for his role as superhero Birdman, as he struggles to mount a Broadway adaptation of a short story by Raymond Carver. It stars Michael Keaton, with a supporting cast of Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts

Disney once again gains success with "Big Hero 6" as Best Animated Movie. "Big Hero 6" is indeed one of the best animated movies to come out of Disney in recent years. It is as close to landmark quality to their previous smash hit "Frozen".

The Best Editing Award went to "Whiplash", Graham Moore won the Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Imitation Game". "The Grand Budapest Hotel" also went home with several awards, which include Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Make-up and Hairstyling, and Alexandre Desplat for Best Original Score. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" from master director Wes Anderson (who gave us such unforgettable masterpieces such as "Moonrise Kingdom", "Fantastic Mr. Fox", and "The Royal Tenenbaums"), is inspired by the writings of Stefan Zweig. It stars Ralph Fiennes as a concierge who teams up with one of his employees (Tony Revolori) to prove his innocence after he is framed for murder.

The Best Foreign Language Film was won by Poland with the film "Ida". Set in Poland in 1962, "Ida" is about a young woman on the verge of taking vows as a Catholic nun. The film has also been said to penetrate the darkest, thorniest thickets of Polish history, reckoning with the crimes of Stalinism and the Holocaust. The Best Documentary Feature was won by "Citizenfour" which was directed by Laura Poitras, and is documentary about Edward Snowden and the NSA spying scandal.

The greenlight is lit on the third Wolverine movie! Wolverine 3 (which does not yet have an official title) which will be directed by James Mangold will begin shooting early next year, and is being slated for March 3, 2017.

Of course, Hugh Jackman will be returning as Wolverine. In an interview last 2014, Jackman has said that this third Wolverine movie could be his last appearance as the character. But in an interview with EW last month, he has recanted and expressed that he wants to play Wolverine until he dies, after being inspired by Michael Keaton‘s performance in Birdman. Here's what he said:
"I said to my wife, ‘The moral is that I should never stop playing Wolverine. I’ve got to find a way to keep playing him until I die.’ I know that someday they’ll recast the role with another actor…I’d be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic."

Even though many of us preferred that the Toy Story saga closed with a marvellous third movie closing for a trilogy that consisted of consistently three great movies. A fourth movie is being developed. But news has come up recently that "Toy Story 4" will not be a direct sequel to the trilogy, but rather; "Toy Story 4" is said to be "taking the franchise in a new direction" and would be a romantic comedy.

In an interview with Disney Latino, studio president Jim Morris revealed that the next Toy Story chapter will not be a direct continuation of the original trilogy. He quotes:
"The third movie ended in a beautiful way and completed a trilogy. I think this movie is not part of this trilogy. It is a separate story, which in turn I do not know if will be continued. Never begin a project with that in mind."

He continues that it will be a romantic comedy, stating:
"It is not a continuation of the end of the story of Toy Story 3.Temporarily it is, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. It will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children. I think it will be a very good movie."

Morris also said that director John Lasseter found the idea “irresistible”, pointing out that Pixar films are successful enough that that they don’t have to exploit them with sequels just to make money. The story is being credited to Lasseter, Unkrich, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter. Rashida Jones and Will McCormack will pen the script. Toy Story 4 is set to hit theaters June 16th, 2017.
