David Yates out to make TARZAN; eyes Alexander Skarsgard and Christoph Waltz to headline cast

David Yates, the director of much of the later Harry Potter movies, and Warner Brothers are developing a Tarzan movie. Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) has emerged as Yates’ top choice to play Tarzan in the pic. And just this week, Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained) has entered talks to take on the villain role. In addition to that, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone and Margot Robbie are among the actresses are currently being considered for the role of the female lead Jane. Earlier this year word came that Warner Bros. was putting the brakes on Tarzan due to budget concerns. But now, the project is back on track. [hit the jump to continue]

The script has gone through a number of drafts by scribes like John August, Cormac and Marianne Wibberley, and most recently Adam Cozad. The project may be looking at a summer 2014 production start-date, and although the skeds are not yet officially announced, Tarzan could hit theaters as early as December 2015 or summer 2016.

Tarzan is the fictional character which has first appeared in the classic 1918 novel Tarzan of the Apes  which was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Tarzan is an archetypal feral child raised in the African jungles by the Mangani "great apes"; he later experiences civilization only to largely reject it and return to the wild as a heroic adventurer. Aside from the first novel, Tarzan appeared in twenty-five sequels, three authorized books by other authors, and innumerable works in other media, authorized and not.

There has been around 89 Tarzan movies. Among the most popular are the TV and Movie series of Tarzan in the 1950's, the 1984 film Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (which starred Christopher Lambert), the Disney Tarzan movie, and of course the Pinoy spoof starring Joey De Leon; Starzan.
