Captain Planet and the Planeteers being developed as a live-action movie

Captain Planet and the Planeteers may have been one of the corniest cartoon shows that have come out in the early 1990s, but it certainly was one of the most successful and most popular cartoons ever. Plus, it was a good show that promotes environmentalism among children. Now, this cartoon has been picked up by Sony for a live-action movie adaptation. [read the rest of the article after the jump]

Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to pick up the rights to the early 1990s series for an adaptation to be produced by Mark Gordon, Don Murphy and Susan Montford.

The show was produced by Turner Broadcasting and DIC Entertainment, the latter known for Inspector Gadget and The Real Ghostbusters cartoon shows.

Five youngsters from around the world -- North America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and South America are given by Gaia (Mother Earth) five magic rings in order to defend the Earth from the greatest of disasters, pollution, environmental hazards, and making efforts to educate mankind to keep others from happening. These five are called the Planeteers. But in situations that the Planeteers cannot resolve alone, they can combine their powers to summon Captain Planet, a super hero, who possesses all of their powers magnified, symbolizing the premise that the combined efforts of a team are stronger than its individual parts.

A movie adaptation attempted to take form in the 1990s but only reached the script stage. Murphy and Montford developed a live-action series with Cartoon Network in the late 2000s but it never took root.

For now, the movie is still in development, and a formal start of production is yet to be announced.

Comedy video website - Funny or Die - had come out with a spoof video of Captain Planet a year ago, with Don Cheadle as Captain Planet. [SEE THE VIDEO HERE] The video had garnered such a popularity and had gone viral. Perhaps it has awakened the generation that grew up on Captain Planet, and possibly revived consciousness for the cheesy, but educational superhero.

I think Captain Planet is a good concept for a movie, hopefully something that will indeed be more lighthearted and in tune with the 80s and 90s style of superhero movies; something that would refreshingly stand apart from the recent more darker and more realist superhero movies.
