After much speculation about who the villain of the next Star Trek movie is, Karl Urban who plays Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in the new Star Trek line-up, may have accidentally revealed that the villain is Gary Mitchell; a villain from the original Star Trek TV series, specifically, the series' first antagonist. During a promotional junket for his upcoming film Dredd, Urban told SFX about what it was like to work with Benedict Cumberbatch, who is cast as the movie's villain:
“He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.”
Gary Mitchell was originally played by actor Gary Lockwood, on the episode entitled "Where No Man Has Gone Before". Mitchell attended Starfleet Academy with Kirk, and the two went on a mission to a planet where Mitchell was hit by a galactic barrier that gave him telepathic and telekinetic abilities in godlike levels.
Despite the fact the film’s co-writer Roberto Orci has denied that Mitchell will be the villain, that denial still doesnt hold up since Cumberbatch’s outfit has a Starfleet emblem on it.
Benedict Cumberbach seems like a promising actor, he's up for lots of upcoming projects that will surely put him on the geek map; villain for Star Trek 2, Smaug for The Hobbit, and roles in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, Warhorse, and the modern BBC adaptation series Sherlock.
Trekkies are also looking forward to, and if Klingons will make an appearance in the next Star Trek movie. Klingons are the alien race that a huge chunk of the trekkie universe of fans are crazy about. Be it Mitchell or Klingons, I'm sure we wont care as long as J.J. Abrams delivers a magnificent Star Trek movie like he did in his first one.
Abram's STAR TREK 2 began filming in January 2012, with a scheduled release date of May 17, 2013.
