As part of the World Premieres Film Festival Philippines 2016, the movie that was directed by Quirino “Quin” Baterna and Leonardo Q. Belen will have its premiere at the Cinematheque Iloilo on Solis Street.
It was cleaned and scanned with digital restoration at the film laboratories of the CNC (Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée or the National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image), in partnership with the National Film Archives of the Philippines (NFAP) and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).
Béatrice de Pastre, Director of the Archives Collection of the CNC, will keynote the premiere with a talk about the process of restoring the classic film prior to its screening.
Her honored presence for the historic event follows the close ties between the Philippines and French governments, especially in the sector of culture and cinema. NFAP technical operations supervisor Dominic Bekaert will accompany De Pastre.
De Pastre will bring to Cinematheque Iloilo a set of classic silent French short films, which will also be screened on July 1. These turn-of-the-century French classics were restored by the CNC, and will be shown with live musical accompaniment.
In celebration of winning the Best International Short Film at The People’s Film Festival in New York, TM Malones’ Sin-o ang Tiktik will start off the event with its first-ever screening in the Philippines.
Ginauhaw Ako, Ginagutom Ako is the first film restoration project between the CNC, NFAP and FDCP.
The film follows the story of a woman orphaned at a young age by her mother who works as a prostitute. Despite her attempts to improve her life, she stumbles into a series of misfortunes and finds herself living the same life her mother had lived.
Teetering on the edge of self-destruction, a ray of hope offers her a chance of escape.
The film stars Bernard Bonnin, Susan Henson, Dave Coloma, Jessie Terre, Ernie Brown, Cesar "Sario" Araneta, Fred Temperatura, Fred and Milko Cataluña, Ruby Ann, and Baltazar Dofitas, among other Ilonggo actors and actresses.
Having established a love for writing from an early age, Quin Baterna began his career first as a broadcaster and newscaster, serving in the local industry for nearly twenty decades.
Baterna became a writer of Panorama magazine and The Manila Bulletin among many other publications, rising to eventually become an icon in Hiligaynon literature.
He worked tirelessly to support the production of quality literature, film, and performance arts in Hiligaynon.
In 1993, he received the prestigious Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas from the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas in 1993.
A television and film director, scriptwriter, correspondent of The Manila Bulletin, and novelist, Leonardo Q. Belen was also known for his films Ikaw ang Susunod, Stop Abortion, and Pinoy Super Kid, as well as his best-selling handbook Defensive Driving.
He was a board member of the IBC -13 over three administrations.
Part of the Filipino Classics parallel section of the World Premieres Film Festival Philippines 2016, Ginauhaw Ako, Ginagutom Ako and the collected silent French short films will screen as part of the regular festival run in both Metro Manila and Iloilo from June 29 to July 10, 2016.
