Just last month, there was an announcement that TRON 3 is being developed. Now, it looks like Disney has pulled the plug on the project, and TRON 3 is no more... [hit the jump to continue]
Preparations that included the return of director Joseph Kosinski and its stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. Production was previously expected to begin this year in Vancouver. Previously, there has been a delay in getting the sequel off the ground because of the challenges faced in trying to come up with the right script.
Disney had not provided an official reason why they're cancelling Tron 3 but it's fair to assume that the recent failure of the big-budget live action sci-fi film "Tomorrowland" at the box office probably plays a big factor in why Tron 3 was probably deemed not worth the risk. Director Kosinski's last movie since "Tron: Legacy" was "Oblivion" and although I personally loved it, it was not as impressive on the box office. Plus, Garrett Hedlund still does not have that much star power to promise success, and Olivia Wilde is not as big anymore. In addition, it should also be noted that Disney has been preoccupied in bringing its old fairy tale and princess cartoon classics into live-action adaptations, and they will be doing it till that formula will run its course.
