Sony Kills Genndy Tartakovsky’s Animated Popeye Movie

Regardless of the fact that the upcoming animated "Popeye" movie and the buzz surrounding it have been very positive, Sony won’t be taking Genndy Tartakovsky’s vision any further, The director has recently clarified that he was no longer working on the film. [hit the jump to continue]

In an interview with Moviefone, the ‘Hotel Transylvania’ director reveals:
“…we put up a great screening, everybody really liked that sizzle, we got a positive reaction. I was in love with what we were doing, but I think the studio is going through changes and I don’t know if they want to make the Popeye that I want to make. So they’ve got to make a decision… It was hard to let Popeye go, but that’s the business.”

As of the moment, there’s no word if Sony will indeed get a new director and actually go ahead with the project. If it does continue, it's still a big question as to how much Tartakovsky's influence would remain on the project.

This is really sad news for the project because it's losing such a big and important name in the field of animation. Tartakovsky has become an icon with such creations as the animated hits "Dexter's Laboratory", "Samurai Jack", and "Star Wars: Clone Wars". His film debut 2012's "Hotel Transylvania" was a blockbuster success and will be having a sequel set for release this September.

Sony has been undergoing various blunders recently what with the Sony hacks late last year and the humiliating failure of Spider-man 2; now, it looks like Sony is making a big big mistake by losing Tartakovsky.
