In an interview with Moviefone, the ‘Hotel Transylvania’ director reveals:
“…we put up a great screening, everybody really liked that sizzle, we got a positive reaction. I was in love with what we were doing, but I think the studio is going through changes and I don’t know if they want to make the Popeye that I want to make. So they’ve got to make a decision… It was hard to let Popeye go, but that’s the business.”
As of the moment, there’s no word if Sony will indeed get a new director and actually go ahead with the project. If it does continue, it's still a big question as to how much Tartakovsky's influence would remain on the project.
Sony has been undergoing various blunders recently what with the Sony hacks late last year and the humiliating failure of Spider-man 2; now, it looks like Sony is making a big big mistake by losing Tartakovsky.
