WildComing off at the first movie week of the month is Reese Witherspoon's Academy Award nomination entry film for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for Laura Dern. Wild is the chronicle of one woman's 1,100-mile solo hike undertaken as a way to recover from a recent catastrophe. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, written by Nick Hornby, and based on the 2012 written memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed. It was released December 3, 2014 in the US and will open in Philippine theaters February 4, 2015.
Wild Card
Not to be confused with the Reese Witherspoon movie, "Wild Card" is a Jason Statham movie, directed Simon West, and is based on the 1985 novel "Heat" by William Goldman, and is a remake of the 1986 adaptation, also titled "Heat", that starred Burt Reynolds. The story centers on a Las Vegas bodyguard with lethal skills, and his gambling problem that gets him in trouble with the mob. Released in the US just last January 30, it will hit Philippine screens February 4, 2015.
Project Almanac
A group of teens discover secret plans of a time machine, and construct one. However, things start to get out of control. It opens in Philippine screens February 4, 2015.
Other films opening on February 4 are "The Imitation Game" which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a World War 2 Mathematician, Alan Turing, who cracks the enigma code, and the drama thriller "Reclaim" with John Cusack and Ryan Philippe.
Jupiter Ascending
The long awaited, long delayed science fiction epic from the Wachowski Siblings (who were responsible for The Matrix saga) , and stars Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis. In a bright and colorful future, a young destitute caretaker gets targeted by a ruthless son of a powerful family that live on a planet in need of a new heir, so she travels with a genetically engineered warrior to the planet in order to stop his tyrant reign.With a release date advance from the US by 2 days, it opens in Philippine screens February 5, 2015.
February 11, we'll be seeing the opening of the family movie that adapts the popular bear character "Paddington", The Kevin Hart and Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting Comedy "The Wedding Ringer", the horror-thriller "The Taking of Deborah Logan", and the adaptation of the novel of the same name "Fifty Shades of Grey".
Kingsman: The Secret Service
The upcoming explosive spy movie directed by Matthew Vaughn, based on the comic book The Secret Service created by Dave Gibbons and Mark Millar, and stars Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Strong, Taron Egerton, and Michael Caine. The story initiates with a veteran secret agent/chess expert who leads a young protégé into the world of espionage. Having been released in the UK in advance, it boasts a strong critic backing, receiving generally positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a rating of 75%, and on Metacritic, the film has a score of 73 out of 100, indicating "generally favorable reviews". The film hits the Philippines on February 18, 2015.
Also opening on February 18 is "Unbroken" which is a Warld War II movie directed by Anglina Jolie, "Inherent Vice" which is a crime drama directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, and Owen Wilson. And also "Dragon Blade" which stars Jacky Chan, Adrien Brody, and John Cusack.
Big Eyes
is a biographical comedy-drama film directed by Tim Burton, and starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. The film focuses on American artist Margaret Keane (Adams), whose work was fraudulently claimed in the 1950s and 1960s by her then-husband, Walter Keane (Waltz), and their heated divorce trial after Margaret accused Walter of stealing credit for her paintings. It was released theatrically on December 25, 2014, in the United States by The Weinstein Company. The film was met with positive reviews and was nominated for three Golden Globes, with Adams winning Best Actress. Big Eyes sets its sights on Philippine theaters February 25, 2015.
Opening on the same week are "Comet"which is a parallel universe romance with Justin Long and Emmy Rossum, "Focus" which is a crime drama with Will Smith and Margot Robbie, The Pinoy romance flick "There Was a Boy, There Was a Girl" with Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla, and Inigo Dominic Pascual.
